Fans of Retro RPGs Have Plenty to Look Forward to in Octopath Traveler 0

In the 1980s and 90s, role-playing games on consoles were known for their pixelated art style, immersive music, and long, captivating stories. While most RPGs today have become more modern with stunning 3D graphics and even bigger adventures – complete with tons of side quests – Square Enix has stayed true to its origins with the Octopath Traveler series. The developer notes that creating these games with their unique ‘HD-2D’ style is surprisingly costly, but the newest installment, Octopath Traveler 0, appears to offer everything retro RPG fans could want and more.

HD-2D is a unique style that blends retro pixel art with modern 3D graphics. It creates a beautiful look by combining 2D elements – like classic pixel art and sprites – with fully rendered 3D environments. This technique could have revolutionized older games; titles like The Legend of Zelda and early Final Fantasy games might have looked very different if the technology had existed back then. The new game, Octopath Traveler 0, continues this style, but it’s also adding features commonly found in today’s games, going beyond what’s been done in previous Octopath Traveler titles. This is thanks to the collaboration between DokiDoki Groove Works and Square Enix.

Octopath Traveler 0 Bridges the Gap of Retro RPGs and Modern Titles

The Octopath Traveler series is fairly recent, beginning with the first game on Nintendo Switch in 2018. This game was also notable for pioneering a new visual style called HD-2D. It soon became available on Windows, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles. In 2020, a prequel called Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent launched on mobile devices in Japan, with Western players gaining access in 2022. A direct sequel, Octopath Traveler II, followed in 2023, leaving fans wanting more. The next installment, Octopath Traveler 0, is a standalone prequel coming to all major consoles and PC in late 2025. A trailer in July 2025 confirmed it will also be available on both the new Nintendo Switch 2 and the original Switch.

Previous games in the Octopath Traveler series are visually stunning, largely thanks to their incredible graphics. Square Enix skillfully combines 2D and 3D designs to create a unique look, similar to a tilt-shift effect. This technique cleverly uses focus and blur to draw your eye to key areas, making the characters appear more three-dimensional. Octopath Traveler 0 takes things even further by adding two features commonly found in today’s games, building on the already impressive visuals.

This new installment introduces town-building and character creation – features not previously seen in the Octopath Traveler series. While common in many modern RPGs, these elements weren’t present in the classic games that inspired Octopath Traveler. Instead of choosing a pre-made hero, players now create their own character, who begins their journey in the ruined town of Wishvale. The game focuses on rebuilding the village throughout the story. This isn’t just about repairing buildings, though; you get to decide what structures are built and where, with elements of farming and town planning similar to those found in Stardew Valley.

Adding New Elements to a Retro-RPG Creates a Unique Sense of Nostalgia Unlike Similar Games

It’s clear the developers of Octopath Traveler 0 are passionate about classic RPGs. They’ve taken a beloved genre and made it even better by adding new features that most players will easily understand. The game prioritizes player freedom, offering plenty of options rather than limiting how you play. The turn-based combat is familiar and satisfying, and the added details refine a time-tested formula. Initial impressions from the game’s demo are very positive, with reviewers praising the music, larger eight-character party, focus on exploration and character development, and engaging combat system – suggesting it will appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

The highly anticipated game, Octopath Traveler 0, will be released on December 4, 2025. Are you planning to get it? Share your thoughts and join the discussion in the ComicBook Forum!
