7 Fox Marvel Characters That the MCU Will Never Get Right

Okay, Marvel is finally getting serious about bringing all their characters together! After regaining the rights to those previously owned by Fox, they’re kicking things off in a big way with Deadpool & Wolverine. This isn’t just another superhero flick; it dives into the multiverse, giving Deadpool and Wolverine a chance to save…well, everything, before they eventually team up with the Avengers. And the fun doesn’t stop there! The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces Marvel’s First Family and, get this, teases Doctor Doom – the villain from Avengers: Doomsday – in a mid-credits scene. It’s a clear signal that Marvel is building towards something massive, and I’m here for it!

The upcoming movie Doomsday will bring back several actors known for their roles in previous Fox Marvel films. Many of the original X-Men cast members are reprising their parts for what will likely be the last time before the series is rebooted in the next few years. Fans should appreciate these performances, as some of these characters won’t be portrayed as well when they’re integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Here are seven Fox Marvel characters that may not translate successfully to the MCU.

7) Nightcrawler

Alan Cumming will be returning to play Nightcrawler (Kurt Wagner) in the upcoming film, Doomsday. The movie is expected to expand on the story established in X2, giving Nightcrawler opportunities for dynamic action scenes. However, fans might miss the original’s practical effects, as the character will likely be created mostly with CGI. While Marvel Studios’ version of the mutant could appear in more scenes, it’s possible he won’t be as complex or well-developed as the original portrayal.

6) Sabretooth

It’s notable that Tyler Mane returns as Sabretooth in Deadpool & Wolverine, briefly fighting Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. However, many fans consider Liev Schreiber’s portrayal of the character to be superior. Though Schreiber only appeared in one film, his version of Sabretooth added a compelling emotional connection to Wolverine, raising the intensity of their rivalry. The Marvel Cinematic Universe will face a challenge trying to recreate that same dynamic, even if future films are technically more polished.

5) Mystique

Shape-shifting often feels like a trick ability in stories, used more for confusion than real power. However, Mystique stands out as a truly powerful character in the original X-Men trilogy, even managing to defeat most of the X-Men before Wolverine discovers her. Her return in Doomsday will likely be much more difficult, facing an incredibly powerful opponent. The new version of Mystique will have a tough time feeling as impactful as she did in the previous X-Men films.

4) Magneto

Magneto, the X-Men’s iconic villain, has been portrayed successfully twice in live-action films, thanks to the talents of both Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender, who each brought nuance to the already complex character. With McKellen likely finished in the role, it will be challenging to find another actor who can capture the character’s essence, especially considering Magneto’s backstory has been explored extensively. Ideally, Marvel would find a fresh angle for the character in the MCU, but that seems unlikely.

3) Professor X

Charles Xavier, Magneto’s close friend and enemy, has been portrayed well in two previous versions. However, his appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was disappointing and suggests Marvel may not be prepared to handle such a powerful character. The Doomsday project could potentially improve things, but its success isn’t certain given the many competing projects already underway.

2) Rogue

Rogue isn’t a particularly memorable character in the X-Men films. She often feels like a supporting player, especially in key scenes, and even abandons her teammates. But the extended “Rogue Cut” of X-Men: Days of Future Past adds much-needed depth to her story. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe might give Rogue more power, it’s uncertain if they can make her as compelling as she is in this version.

1) Quicksilver

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has already introduced Quicksilver, but it wasn’t the version from the X-Men comics. While Marvel could bring the character back, it would be a misstep. Evan Peters’ portrayal of Quicksilver was far superior to Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s, which is why fans were so eager to see Peters return in WandaVision. Marvel didn’t capitalize on that opportunity, and now it’s time to move on.
