One of 2025’s Best Horror Movies Is Already Streaming Free (But There’s a Problem)

Despite a few upcoming films like Predator: Badlands, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, and Anaconda still scheduled for theaters, 2025 has been a fantastic year for horror movies. Blockbuster successes and the revival of popular franchises have drawn large crowds to theaters, demonstrating the genre’s continued popularity. Many of this year’s top horror films are now available to stream, and just in time for Halloween, one of the best is currently free to watch.

Osgood Perkins’ film The Monkey, based on Stephen King’s 1980 novel, became available to stream on Kanopy on October 31st. Just eight months after its release in theaters, the movie is now available for free streaming, though you’ll need a library card to sign up for Kanopy. The film stars Theo James as twin brothers, Hal and Bill, whose lives are thrown into chaos when they find a strange wind-up monkey in their attic, leading to a series of terrifying deaths.

The Monkey Is a Bloody Good Time

Wow, this year’s had some good horror, but nothing hit me quite like The Monkey! Seriously, it’s brilliantly funny and unbelievably gory. Perkins really shows with this film why he’s a major force in horror – he can do it all! It’s a totally wild story that walks the line between genuinely scary and laugh-out-loud funny. If you want something over-the-top, with both a ton of laughs and some incredibly creative, bloody kills – honestly, they might even be better than the latest Final Destination – you absolutely have to check out The Monkey. You won’t regret it!

The movie is consistently ranked among the year’s best horror films and stands out as a strong adaptation of Stephen King’s work. It takes some creative risks, successfully transforming the story into a darkly comedic horror film rather than a typical scare-fest. According to ComicBook, the film fully embraces the book’s wild premise, resulting in a rewarding experience that respects the original story while also offering a unique and fresh take on King’s ideas.

Beyond being a fantastic adaptation of the story and showcasing some of the year’s most striking on-screen deaths, The Monkey also boasts an impressive performance by James, who convincingly plays twin brothers with very different personalities. The film currently has a 77% rating from critics and a 55% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating a bit of a split in opinion.

Other Horror Movies Now on Kanopy

With a library card, you can stream a wide variety of scary movies on Kanopy. They have a great selection of horror films, including titles like Possession, Train to Busan, Suspiria, Skinamarink, Scream, Terrifier 3, and the popular film Longlegs.
