Mark Hamill, best known as Luke Skywalker from Star Wars, doesn’t have any advice for the new generation of filmmakers and storytellers who are now leading the franchise. He feels they’re handling things well on their own.
Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker, recently admitted he didn’t have any advice to offer Ryan Gosling about the new Star Wars film, Starfighter (according to PEOPLE).
I don’t need to offer them advice – they’re all doing great. My time has passed for giving guidance, and actually, I’d like to get their input now.
I’ve noticed Mark Hamill is a big fan of Ryan Gosling! He recently said he especially loved Gosling’s hilarious turn as Beavis on Saturday Night Live earlier this year. It’s interesting because just a few months ago, he hinted he was pretty much done with Star Wars, according to ComicBook.com, and now he’s praising someone taking on a big role in that universe. It feels like he’s passing the torch, in a way.
I’m incredibly thankful to George Lucas for including me in the original Star Wars. He used to joke it was the most expensive movie ever made on a small budget! None of us imagined it would become such a lasting franchise and cultural phenomenon. I’ve had my time with it, and while I appreciate being a part of that history, I believe the focus should now be on new stories and characters moving forward.
Hamill later explained his previous comments, saying he hasn’t actually retired from Star Wars – it feels more like the franchise has moved on without him (according to TODAY).
I recently saw headlines claiming Mark Hamill had left the Star Wars franchise, but that’s not true – no one has asked me to! They haven’t even invited me back. Honestly, there’s only so much you can do with a Force Ghost character. I’ve always thought it would be amazing to have a whole movie take place in the realm of the Force Ghosts, where I could have scenes with the late Alec Guinness. That would be a dream come true.
As a longtime fan, seeing Mark Hamill reprise his iconic role as Luke Skywalker in 2015’s The Force Awakens was a real thrill. He had a more substantial part in The Last Jedi, but sadly, that film marked the end of Luke’s journey – though not his presence entirely. While Luke ultimately passed away, he did reappear briefly in The Rise of Skywalker as a Force Ghost, which was a nice touch for fans like me.
Luke Skywalker’s appearance was brought back for the Disney+ series The Mandalorian using deepfake technology. Mark Hamill provided the voice and motion capture, but he’s expressed reluctance to continue this process, as he stated in an interview with Esquire in 2023.
Fans have suggested continuing Luke Skywalker’s story after ‘Return of the Jedi,’ but I don’t believe that’s necessary. Even if they did want to, they’d need to find an actor who looks the right age.
Lucasfilm appears unlikely to recast Luke Skywalker, following comments made by President Kathleen Kennedy in 2022. Kennedy admitted that replacing Harrison Ford with Alden Ehrenreich in the film Solo: A Star Wars Story was a mistake, as reported by Vanity Fair. She stated that the experience taught them a valuable lesson, and they now understand that recasting iconic characters isn’t a good idea.
Beyond Ryan Gosling’s new character in the upcoming Starfighter film, future Star Wars projects will continue the stories of Rey from the sequel trilogy and Din Djarin and Grogu from The Mandalorian. James Mangold is also working on a movie that takes place 25,000 years before A New Hope, exploring the origins of the Jedi.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m really excited about Shawn Levy’s take on the universe. He’s planning a movie set five years after the last sequel, but it’s going to be its own thing – a standalone adventure. He’s said he doesn’t want to retread old ground or just set things up for another movie; he wants to tell a complete story that stands on its own, which I think is a great approach. He shared this back in August 2024 with Happy Sad Confused, and it sounds really promising.
On May 28, 2027, director Levy will release Starfighter, a fresh take on the Star Wars universe starring Ryan Gosling, and notably, without any involvement from the original Luke Skywalker character.
