The DC Universe has wrapped up its plans for 2025, following the release of the Superman movie starring David Corenswet and the finale of Peacemaker season two. While several DCU movies are planned for 2026, one particularly exciting series is also in the works for James Gunn’s new universe.
I listen to The Green Lanterns podcast, and they recently shared something interesting. They found an old newsletter from The Hollywood Reporter from October that said the next DCU project would be the Supergirl movie, not the Lanterns TV show we’ve been waiting for. The podcast actually contacted The Hollywood Reporter to double-check if that meant the Lanterns show would be released after the movie comes out.
Someone from THR responded to a query, confirming that the Lanterns will likely pursue Supergirl. According to Aaron Pierre in an interview with Esquire, filming for the first season of the HBO series concluded in October 2025.
Pierre will play John Stewart as one of the Green Lanterns in the new DC Universe. Kyle Chandler will be Hal Jordan, and Nathan Fillion will return as Guy Gardner in the first season of the show Lanterns.
Originally, the TV show Lanterns was expected to premiere in early 2026. However, during a DC Universe press event in February 2025 – which ScreenRant covered – James Gunn and Peter Safran announced this timeline before any filming had begun.
James Gunn told IGN on November 18, 2024, that the initial slate of DC Universe projects includes Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker, Lanterns, and Supergirl, along with some currently unannounced titles. When asked about the release order, he indicated that Lanterns and Supergirl are expected to come out around the same time.
As of today, Warner Bros. TV, HBO, and DC Studios haven’t officially responded to recent reports about the DCU’s TV series. James Gunn briefly mentioned the HBO show on October 21st while talking about the trailer for Lanterns.
The DC Studios co-CEO, who had seen a preview of the show, admitted they don’t know when it will be released. They explained that HBO’s marketing approach differs from that of traditional films. Currently, HBO hasn’t announced an official premiere date for Lanterns.
