Pokémon Go has changed a lot over the years, with some updates being well-received and others causing frustration. However, the avatar redesign was particularly controversial. After several years with the same character designs, the 2024 ‘Rediscover Go’ update introduced new avatars, which many fans disliked. Recently, an update made those avatars even worse, leading players to search for ways to fix the issue.
The recent redesign of avatars in Pokemon Go has upset many fans, who feel the new characters look strangely soft and undefined. While the update does offer more options for body types, some players have compared the overall look – particularly the facial expressions – to a generic, almost plastic appearance. This update also introduced a new animation that many find disturbing, and to make matters worse, it’s caused inventory space to become severely limited. However, players have discovered a workaround to avoid seeing the unsettling animation while continuing to enjoy the game.
Pokemon Go Players Insist On Covering Up That Creepy XP Gain Grin
After a major update to Pokémon Go, the way players earn experience points (XP) and level up has changed. The maximum level has been increased from 50 to 80, and the amount of XP needed to reach each level has been adjusted for a smoother progression. While level-up challenges still exist, they’ve been modified. Players have also noticed a new animation that plays when they gain XP—their avatar makes a stiff, unnatural smile that many find awkward, especially considering the recent avatar redesign. In fact, some players are actively trying to avoid actions that trigger this animation.
I figured out how to remove the cursed grin your avatar makes when you get XP

A Pokemon Go player named jake_rawr_meow has gone to some lengths to hide the game’s unsettling “cursed grin.” While their solution might be a little spooky itself, the core idea is good. Many other players have commented that they also use masks in Pokemon Go to avoid seeing that specific animation.
Many Pokémon Go players are changing their in-game avatars to wear face masks, ranging from simple medical masks to more creative designs like those of Pokémon such as Giratina or Banette. It seems they’re doing this to hide a new XP animation. While some players have used masks since the game’s appearance was updated, others are now starting to cover their avatars’ faces after seeing this new, potentially unwanted, pop-up.
Players dislike the new feature for more than just its creepy appearance. Even though the mask hides the unsettling animation, it can’t hide the feeling of disappointment when you see how slowly the progress bar fills.

As one player noticed, the pop-up appears to be designed to get you to use a Lucky Egg. Usually, the experience bar briefly flashes white but doesn’t fill up. The game then shows your avatar with a slightly intimidating smile, essentially encouraging you to use Lucky Eggs to progress faster – which could lead to needing to buy more Poke Coins to restock them.
Ultimately, this animation is a small issue in a game that people still enjoy playing every day. The fact that players go to great lengths to avoid it highlights that many Pokémon Go fans still want the recent avatar design to be updated. Until then, you can always use a fun mask in the game to hide the avatar while you search for Shiny Pokémon.
