The next Scream movie, Scream 7, will bring back a beloved character who fans felt deserved a better ending. Following the events of Scream 6, which took the action to New York City, the story is returning to its original setting. Neve Campbell will reprise her role as Sidney Prescott and once again confront a new Ghostface targeting her family.
The first trailer for Scream 7 shows that Courteney Cox, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown will be returning for the new film. And there’s a surprise for fans of the original: Matthew Lillard is reprising his role as Stu Macher, one of the killers from the very first Scream movie in 1996.
It’s still a mystery how Stu Macher is coming back almost 30 years after his death, but it should be interesting to see how the movie explains it. The same is true for David Arquette’s character, Dewey, who is reportedly returning despite dying in the last Scream film. His return could finally give a satisfying resolution to one of the most debated moments in recent horror movies.
Dewey Can Receive A Better Send-Off Than His Death In Scream 5
The fifth Scream movie successfully brought the franchise back to life for a new audience. It cleverly balanced honoring the series’ past with fresh characters and a new mystery, even while poking fun at the trend of relying on nostalgia. The film was particularly satisfying for longtime fans because it brought back beloved characters Sidney, Gale, and Dewey alongside the new cast.
Sadly, Dewey doesn’t survive Scream 5, and his death is particularly upsetting for many fans. While it’s always tough to see a beloved character go, the way it happens feels especially avoidable. During the hospital fight, Dewey shoots Ghostface twice, seemingly incapacitating the killer. However, instead of escaping with the others, he tries to finish the job. Just as he’s about to deliver the final shot, his phone rings, giving Ghostface the split-second opportunity needed to attack and kill him.
The way Dewey died felt like a cheap shock tactic instead of a satisfying conclusion to his character arc. If he returns in Scream 7 – whether through a memory, a dream, or a surprising plot twist – it’s an opportunity to give him a more respectful and meaningful farewell, recognizing his importance as a central, emotionally resonant figure in the series.
