During Saturday Night’s Main Event, WWE announced details about John Cena’s last match as part of his retirement tour. The match will be held December 13th in Washington, DC. While the date was already known, the identity of Cena’s final opponent remained a mystery. WWE has now revealed how they’ll determine who he faces, and surprisingly, that opponent might not be a current WWE wrestler.
During tonight’s WWE show, a video featuring John Cena announced a new 16-person tournament starting next Monday on Raw. The participants will be chosen randomly and will come from all of WWE’s brands – Raw, SmackDown, and NXT – with a surprising addition: wrestlers from outside of WWE as well.
Because of this, John Cena won’t be choosing who he faces in his last match. By December 13th, his opponent will be decided through a tournament. This feels like a classic Cena decision – it gives promising new wrestlers a chance to stand out. It also builds excitement for his final match, making it a key part of every Raw, SmackDown, and NXT show over the next month.
The tournament will probably feature wrestlers from TNA and AAA, which is a really exciting and surprising development. We could see stars like Mr. Iguana and Joe Hendry competing. As for wrestlers from NXT, several names are possibilities, including Oba Femi, Trick Williams, Je’Von Evans, Jasper Troy, Myles Borne, and Lexis King. While it’s unlikely many NXT wrestlers will participate, a couple from that group could definitely be involved.
Before the tournament was officially announced, many people expected Gunther to be John Cena’s last opponent, and that’s still a strong possibility. If Gunther enters the tournament, a lot of fans will likely bet on him to win, though it could also be a clever way to surprise everyone. Edge was another popular choice, but he currently has a contract with a different wrestling company, AEW, making that unlikely.
There’s been talk that Chris Jericho might leave AEW and return to WWE, and he’s a possible opponent for a December match. It’s unclear if these rumors are true or if he’d even be available, but having him as the final opponent would be a huge event.
