10 Worst Ways Marvel Superheroes have Died

Being a superhero, particularly in Marvel Comics, is incredibly challenging and constantly fraught with danger. Though heroes usually win their battles against evil, they sometimes fall. Supervillains have occasionally defeated them, even delivering fatal blows. While fans often don’t take these deaths seriously because heroes frequently return, the moments themselves can be shockingly violent. In their efforts to protect people, superheroes have suffered terrible injuries – impalement, shootings, being torn apart, explosions, and even worse fates.

Even though many of these heroes were eventually brought back to life, their deaths were terrifying and incredibly painful when they happened. Here’s a look at some of the most shocking and violent ways Marvel heroes have died while protecting others.

10) Black Widow’s Neck is Broken

During a very divisive storyline called Secret Empire, Captain America was secretly replaced by a Hydra agent as part of a plan to control the United States. Black Widow led the effort to stop this impostor, forming a group of heroes called the Champions to fight back. During a major battle in Washington, D.C., Miles Morales was fighting the Hydra Captain America, a fight that appeared to match a prediction made by the Inhuman Ulysses, who had foreseen Miles killing Captain America. Black Widow attempted to stop Miles, fearing he would fulfill this prophecy. Unfortunately, her intervention led to the Hydra Captain America fatally striking her with his shield.

9) Nitro Incinerates the New Warriors

The Civil War storyline is a hugely important event in Marvel Comics, and it began with a terrible tragedy. A team of young, relatively unknown superheroes called the New Warriors were trying to gain recognition by filming their adventures for a reality show. During a confrontation with villains, including the explosive Nitro, things went horribly wrong. Nitro detonated, destroying the surrounding area and killing everyone nearby – including the New Warriors themselves (Namorita, Microbe, and Night Thrasher) and, tragically, a school full of children. This disaster led to the creation of the Superhero Registration Act, a law that would have required all superheroes to work directly for the U.S. government.

8) Bullseye Impales Elektra

As a long-time Marvel fan, one death that always stuck with me was Elektra’s. She was this incredibly skilled ninja, and had a complicated history with Daredevil, even working for Kingpin for a while. But when she refused to kill Foggy Nelson, Daredevil’s friend, Kingpin lost it and sent Bullseye after her. What followed was a really brutal fight, and Bullseye ultimately stabbed Elektra with her own weapons. It was devastating seeing her barely manage to crawl to Daredevil’s place, where she tragically died in his arms. Even though she did eventually return, that initial death was seriously shocking for its graphic nature, especially back in the 80s when it first came out.

7) Nightcrawler is Skewered by a Fist Through his Chest

Nightcrawler, whose real name is Kurt Wagner, is known as one of the most compassionate members of the X-Men, which makes his ultimate sacrifice particularly heartbreaking. After Scarlet Witch stripped most mutants of their powers, a young mutant named Hope emerged with the ability to restore them. Unfortunately, anti-mutant groups sought to eliminate Hope, fearing the resurgence of mutantkind. The remaining powered X-Men dedicated themselves to protecting her. When the mutant-hating cyborg Bastion attacked, Nightcrawler bravely teleported in front of Hope, taking the blow meant for her. Using his final moments, he teleported Hope to safety, saving her life but losing his own.

6) Wolverine Becomes Encased in Adamantium

Wolverine is famously one of the most difficult heroes to kill in Marvel Comics, thanks to his incredible healing ability and sheer determination. However, during the ‘Death of Wolverine’ storyline, he contracted a virus that stripped him of his healing factor. This enraged Dr. Cornelius, who had been part of the Weapon X program and desperately wanted to steal Wolverine’s regenerative powers. In a furious rage, Dr. Cornelius covered Wolverine in liquid-hot adamantium. Though Wolverine managed to kill the doctor, he couldn’t escape as the molten metal hardened around him, trapping him and ultimately causing him to suffocate within his adamantium shell.

5) Daken Cuts Punisher into Pieces

After Norman Osborn took charge of the Superhuman Defense Initiative, he identified heroes who might oppose him, including Frank Castle, known as the Punisher. Osborn tasked Daken, Wolverine’s evil son, with killing the Punisher. A fierce fight broke out between them in the rain, and Daken’s powerful healing ability and claws ultimately overwhelmed Punisher. Daken brutally dismembered and beheaded him. However, Punisher wasn’t truly defeated – his remains were gathered by monsters who brought him back to life as Franken-Castle.

4) Valkyrie is Butchered by Malekith the Accursed

Besides Thor, Brunnhilde, also known as Valkyrie, is one of the most beloved heroes from the Asgardian world in Marvel Comics. During a massive invasion called the War of the Realms, the villain Malekith and his Dark Council tried to take over all Ten Realms. In a brave act of self-sacrifice, Brunnhilde and her fellow Valkyries stayed behind to fight them, allowing the Avengers and Asgardian armies to escape. Unfortunately, the Valkyries were quickly overwhelmed and killed. Brunnhilde, wounded and watching her sisters fall, could only watch as Malekith struck her down. Although the final moment isn’t shown directly, the scene is powerfully disturbing.

3) Ares Gets Torn in Half by Sentry

Ares, the Greek God of War and a powerful, though flawed, hero, once fought alongside the Avengers. Sadly, even his immense strength wasn’t enough to protect him during the Siege event. He briefly joined Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers, and Osborn tricked him into attacking Asgard, falsely claiming Loki was in charge. When Ares discovered Osborn’s deception, he attempted to kill him, but the incredibly powerful hero known as Sentry – secretly controlled by his destructive alter ego, the Void – intervened. In a brutal and shocking act, Sentry completely destroyed Ares, resulting in a gruesome and violent end for the god.

2) The Blob Eats Wasp

The Marvel storyline Ultimatum, set in an alternate universe, is widely considered one of the worst Marvel stories ever told due to its shockingly violent deaths of many popular heroes. The death of Wasp is particularly infamous. After Magneto causes global chaos, Wasp goes missing, and her husband, Yellowjacket, discovers the horrifying truth: she was killed and cannibalized by the supervillain, the Blob. In a brutal act of revenge, Yellowjacket grows to an enormous size and bites off the Blob’s head. The graphic and disturbing deaths, like the consumption of Wasp, are major reasons why Ultimatum is so disliked by fans.

1) Alternate Universe Spider-Man is Torn from the Inside Out

Spider-Man has died in many different universes, but the death of the Spider-Man from Earth-91126 was particularly gruesome. In the story Marvel Zombies Return, a zombie version of Spider-Man arrived on Earth-91126 and immediately began killing and eating the Sinister Six. Only Sandman escaped, and he was so traumatized that when he later met the Spider-Man from his universe, he mistakenly thought it was the zombie. In a panicked rage, Sandman violently forced himself inside the other Spider-Man. Despite the hero’s pleas, Sandman burst out of his stomach, causing horrific injuries and resulting in a brutal death based on a terrible misunderstanding.
