The final season of My Hero Academia is currently airing, with five episodes released so far. Only seven episodes remain to finish the anime’s ten-year run. The first four episodes showed Katsuki Bakugo recovering and defeating All For One, ending his long-running scheme. Now, the story focuses entirely on the final showdown between the hero Izuku Midoriya (Deku) and the villain Shigaraki. The most recent episode, “History’s Greatest Villain,” features Deku, receiving guidance from past One For All users, as he battles Shigaraki in this epic conclusion.
Shigaraki quickly gains the advantage over Deku, stealing his Danger Sense quirk. With this new power, Shigaraki reveals his plan to destroy the country, intending to bring Mount Fuji crashing down. As Deku fights to defend himself, the spirit of a previous One For All user, Kudo, suggests a dangerous solution. They’ve discovered that Star and Stripe managed to reach a troubled child trapped within Shigaraki’s mind. Kudo and the others decide to forcibly transfer the One For All quirks, hoping to expand this mental weakness and save Shigaraki, even if it means Deku will lose his abilities.
My Hero Academia Reveals Deku’s Risky Plan to Defeat Shigaraki

The most recent episode showed that Deku, despite his strength, can’t currently beat Shigaraki. Shigaraki’s ability to quickly heal makes Deku’s attacks ineffective, and Deku’s reluctance to seriously harm Shigaraki is also a hindrance. That’s why, building on the opening Star and Stripe created in Shigaraki’s mind—one that can’t be healed—Kudo’s plan is now underway with everyone’s support. The plan involves Deku forcibly giving Shigaraki Kudo’s Gearshift quirk, enhanced with One For All, to exploit that mental weakness. It’s a dangerous strategy, and not guaranteed to work, but it’s currently Deku’s best chance.
If Deku masters the Gearshift quirk, he’ll be able to avoid the powerful recoil that currently paralyzes him after using it. Importantly, if Shigaraki were to obtain and use Gearshift, he’d suffer the same debilitating backlash, creating a window of opportunity. While dangerous, this strategy has potential, as demonstrated by Star and Stripe before Shigaraki took her quirk. Given that One For All relies on transferring quirks, Deku’s plan has a good chance of working. However, successfully executing it would likely mean Deku loses his quirk entirely once the fight is over, continuing the cycle for the next inheritor of One For All’s legacy.
My Hero Academia and Deku’s Ending Is Something Poetic

The story of My Hero Academia began with Deku, a boy born without any superpowers in a world where almost everyone has them. This made viewers curious to see how he would become the main character. However, when he quickly gained a very powerful ability just two episodes in, it lessened that initial intrigue. Despite this, Deku’s kind heart showed he was worthy of the power, perhaps more than anyone else in the series. Throughout the show, as he fought numerous villains, truly acting like a hero and learning to control his abilities, he became the heart of the story. The passing of One For All from his idol, All Might, to Deku was a deeply meaningful moment.
Deku’s choice to potentially give up his powers is both heartbreaking and true to his character. Throughout the story, he’s consistently prioritized others, and One For All itself is all about selflessness. So, him defeating Shigaraki by sacrificing his quirk feels like a beautifully fitting end to this inspiring story, and one the author clearly intended. It does mean, though, that Deku might lose his powers again after the fight.
While it might be sad to see a hero lose their powers, Deku’s story in My Hero Academia was never really about becoming the strongest. It’s always been about inspiring change and encouraging others to fight for themselves, rather than relying on one person to solve everything. If the series ends with Deku losing his quirk, it might seem disappointing at first, but it would actually be a fitting conclusion, perfectly capturing the show’s themes of selflessness, strength through adversity, and true heroism, potentially making it one of the most emotionally impactful endings in the shonen genre.
