When Glenn Schofield and his team at EA Redwood started working on a new survival horror game, fans were thrilled. Resident Evil 4 had just been a huge success for Capcom, and when Redwood hinted at a game like Resident Evil set in space, excitement for Dead Space grew. Not only did Dead Space become one of EA’s most popular titles, but it also launched a whole franchise, including three main games, two spin-offs, a remake, books, comics, and movies. Among all these releases, a few games are considered the best in the series by fans.
Here is every Dead Space game ranked worst to best.
6) Dead Space Ignition

Dead Space Ignition was created as part of EA’s plan to expand the Dead Space universe beyond traditional video games. It tells a story leading up to Dead Space 2, but it’s a much shorter and simpler experience than the main games, as EA intended it to complement their larger releases. However, making the game smaller also meant changing how it played.
Unlike the scary survival horror fans expected, Ignition is an action puzzle game. Instead of fighting aliens by dismembering them, you’ll spend your time completing one of three repetitive hacking challenges. It was a disappointing release from EA and feels very little like a true Dead Space game.
5) Dead Space 3

While not a bad game, Dead Space 3 feels like a misstep, showing how developers sometimes prioritize reaching a wider audience over staying true to what made the original game special. EA and Visceral Games aimed to broaden Dead Space‘s appeal by adding more action and a cooperative multiplayer mode.
Although the action sequences in Dead Space 3 are functional, the game doesn’t truly capture the feel of the original Dead Space. Combined with a complicated story, a lengthy campaign, and numerous opportunities to spend extra money, it’s a game that put the series on hold for ten years. Ultimately, Dead Space 3 is a prime example of a game suffering from excessive interference from its publisher, EA.
4) Dead Space: Extraction

Extraction is a spin-off of the Dead Space series, created for the Wii. Unlike a previous attempt that disappointed fans, Extraction is a well-made on-rails shooter that really showcased the graphical capabilities of the Nintendo Wii.
While Extraction isn’t perfect – the camera can be a bit wonky and the game is relatively short – it’s still a worthwhile addition to the series. It’s not as intensely frightening as other games in the franchise, but that largely works within its action-focused style. The 2011 PlayStation 3 version, though, didn’t really take advantage of the console’s capabilities, which was a bit disappointing.
3) Dead Space (2008)

When the first Dead Space game came out in 2008, it quickly became obvious that EA had created something truly exceptional. Its gameplay felt like a natural evolution of the survival horror experience offered by Resident Evil 4. Few things are as satisfying as dismembering hordes of Necromorphs with Isaac Clarke’s Plasma Cutter.
One thing that made Dead Space unique was its user interface, which felt like a natural part of the game world. Instead of a typical health bar, Isaac’s health and energy were displayed on the back of his suit. This increased the feeling of being truly in the game, and allowed the developers to create more frightening moments because players were focused on Isaac himself, not a separate health display.
While the story and its surprise ending weren’t the strongest, and the game’s levels can feel a little samey, Dead Space remains a hugely important and influential title in the survival horror genre.
2) Dead Space (Remake)

The Dead Space remake feels like the original game, but improved in every way. You can pretty much say everything good about the first Dead Space and add “but better” to describe this version. It’s the classic game updated for today’s players.
Let me be clear, there are some key improvements. Developer Motive has made the game more focused by removing some of the repeated elements. They’ve also included a new audio system, which significantly enhances the sound design and makes the already terrifying environments even more immersive.
Some players might not like that Isaac Clarke now has a voice, as the developers used it to add extra story details. While these additions aren’t necessarily a problem, some fans who prefer the original game might find it bothersome. Regardless, this is the definitive way to experience Dead Space in 2025.
1) Dead Space 2

Dead Space 2 took everything that made the first game great and made it even better. It masterfully blended intense horror with exciting action, featuring memorable moments without sacrificing the scary atmosphere. The game boasts more types of enemies and more intricate environments compared to the original.
Similar to the original, Isaac Clarke now has a voice in Dead Space 2, which makes the story feel more impactful. The developers also do a great job of delving into his psychological state after surviving the first game. Combined with the consistently excellent sound and a truly unsettling scene, this sequel lives up to the legacy of its predecessor, which is considered one of the best games ever made.
While the recent Dead Space remake looks and plays better, Dead Space 2 is truly the best game in the series. However, it’s best to skip the Severed DLC story; it shifts the focus too much toward action and foreshadows the problems that ultimately hurt Dead Space 3.
