The game Pokemon Legends: Arceus brought significant changes to the Pokemon series, introducing innovative mechanics. Other generations of Pokemon could benefit from similar treatment. After Pokemon Legends: Z-A, it would be great if The Pokemon Company devoted more attention to this spin-off series. However, Kanto doesn’t need another game at the moment; instead, focus should shift towards generations that require more attention. While games like Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet are appealing options, they might be too recent for a spin-off game. Instead, let’s hope to see each older generation get a refreshed experience with a Pokemon Legends game tailored for their respective regions.
We believe that five different generations of Pokémon would make great candidates for standalone spin-off games in the Pokémon Legends series. The Pokémon Company could mix up gameplay mechanics tailored to each region and provide a unique visual style that fits the setting. Here are our picks for the Pokémon games that could benefit most from a reimagining in the Pokémon Legends format.
Generation 2 – Pokemon Gold & Pokemon Silver
In a logical sequence for a Pokemon Legends game, it would be fitting to set the game in the historical region of Johto. This is because, much like how Pokemon Legends: Arceus was set in the past, this choice makes sense given the context. Notably, the original Pokemon Gold and Silver games featured a return to Kanto, so it’s reasonable to expect a similar approach here. The Pokemon Company could incorporate Kanto as rival nations, perhaps even having the Kanto forces be the ones who set fire to the Bell Tower in Ecruteak City. A Legends game could delve into the ancient customs connected to Ho-Oh, Lugia, and the legendary trio, which are deeply rooted in Johto’s rich traditions and spirituality. The Pokemon Company should explore these aspects more thoroughly.
Adventurers might delve into the Alph Ruins in search of the enigma surrounding the elusive Unown characters. It’s possible that these cryptic symbols are connected to an ancient riddle yet to be solved within contemporary games. To make this experience more immersive, multiple storylines could be implemented, allowing players to resolve the clash between Kanto and Johto, unravel the Unown enigma, and even journey through time with Celebi’s assistance. The lore of Johto is extensive yet largely unexplored, making a “Legends” game an ideal platform for further exploration and development.
Generation 3 – Pokemon Ruby & Pokemon Sapphire
In a refreshing twist for the next generation of Pokemon games, it would be intriguing to set the storyline in a near-prehistoric era, emphasizing a primordial landscape teeming with land, air, and sea creatures. The elemental deities that would captivate the populace in this region could be Groudon, Rayquaza, and Kyogre. To add an extra layer of immersion, active volcanoes and terrifying storms could create a dynamic weather system that significantly impacts gameplay, as seen in earlier titles. Furthermore, Regirock, Regice, and Registeel could receive more attention, with the global threat posed by Regigigas serving as the main plot point.
In this game, human characters will live in various tribes, each with unique perspectives – some may be hostile while others peaceful. Players can engage with these tribes, fostering connections through trading and reconciliation. This new relationship system emphasizes survival and exploration. The world is dynamic and evolving, with weather patterns causing new territories to emerge or disappear, providing fresh landscapes to traverse. Submerged ruins, volcanic caves, and lush jungles are a few examples of places where players might find Pokemon. Remarkably, the Battle Tower could serve as a natural landmark, a gathering place for the strongest Pokemon and trainers.
Generation 5 – Pokemon Black & Pokemon White
Revising the statement to a more conversational tone:
It might be more engaging if Pokemon Black and Pokemon White were reimagined in a modern style, similar to Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Instead of starting the game in a new location each time, players could have a home base in Castelia City, which they can return to after a day’s worth of exploration and adventure. This generation had one of the most compelling stories, so it would be fitting for a Legends game to delve deeper into that narrative. The story of Kyurem, Reshiram, and Zekrom could be further explored, along with the Swords of Justice. In this version, factions representing the split dragons may be causing chaos in the city, and it’s up to the player to put a stop to their mischief.
Incorporating Team Plasma adds an extra layer of complexity to the city and surrounding area, creating a highly charged atmosphere. The game allows players to assume the role of a peacekeeper, working alongside an ally to unravel the secrets behind the legendary dragons, ultimately aiming to reduce the tension. The city serves as the central hub, yet players can venture into various regions on missions to capture new Pokemon and unearth clues about Unova’s legends, showcasing the vibrant world of Generation 5.
Generation 7 – Pokemon Sun & Pokemon Moon
As a gamer, stepping back into the world of Pokemon Sun and Moon feels like a journey through the annals of time. I can only imagine the thrill of exploring the ancient version of Alola, where I could uncover the guardian deities for the very first time and delve into their unique bond with the islands. The game would have a significant emphasis on water, enabling me to roam freely across each island and the waters that separate them, much like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. With this setting being ancient Alola, it could be an era where the landscapes were even more diverse and distinct, before all its people had united.
In a storyline where Pokemon games are set in the past, The Pokemon Company initially presents Necrozma before its light was taken. However, an alternate version of Necrozma from the future manages to open a portal and travel back in time to steal its own past light. This event triggers chaos on the islands, causing Ultra Beasts to emerge and disrupt the balance of nature. Players will need to unite the inhabitants of Alola to confront this menace collectively. The only way to stop the malevolent Necrozma is by enlisting the help of guardian deities together with Lunala and Solgaleo, which could also lead to finding Z-Crystals.
Generation 8 – Pokemon Sword & Pokemon Shield
In a special Legendary game for both Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield, we delve into the ominous event known as The Darkest Day. This journey not only reveals the origins of the Galar region but also uncovers its intriguing past. Eternatus, having initiated a calamitous occurrence by trying to absorb Galar’s Dynamax power, will be in motion at the game’s start. Players will assume the role of one of the two legendary heroes, either wielding the sword or the shield. This decision determines the allegiance of Zacian or Zamazenta, respectively. With a trusted rival by your side, you and your ally will rise to become the duo who brought an end to The Darkest Day.
In this revamped scenario, expansive regions such as the Wild Area, Crown Tundra, and Isle of Armor span across the world. These areas serve as sanctuaries amidst chaos caused by rampaging Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokemon. Players will journey from city to city, cultivating their own Dynamax Energy while safeguarding these settlements from Pokemon assaults. Such a Legendary game would undoubtedly rank among the most thrilling installments in the Pokemon franchise, escalating the level of excitement and risk like never before.
