Square Enix Plans to Use AI Tools for QA Testing, Debugging in Game Development by End of 2027

Square Enix recently announced it’s focusing on incorporating artificial intelligence into its operations in Japan. As part of this effort, the company is collaborating with the Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory at the University of Tokyo on joint research projects. Additionally, Square Enix will hold an internal contest encouraging employees to submit AI-focused business ideas, with the best submissions being developed into actual projects.

Square Enix is partnering with the Matsuo-Iwasawa lab to automate 70% of game quality assurance and debugging by the end of 2027. They aim to achieve this by using new automation technologies to make QA processes more efficient. A team of over 10 engineers from both Square Enix and the Matsuo-Iwasawa lab will work together on this research.

Square Enix first announced its plans to use AI for quality assurance and debugging in game development back in May, as part of a larger three-year overhaul. They explained they were building a new research team focused on AI-powered development tools, and expected to see results from this work around 2027 – a timeline that matches the progress report’s stated deadline.

As a huge Square Enix fan, I’m really excited to hear more about their new three-year plan! It sounds like they’re focusing less on just pumping out a ton of games and more on making sure the ones they do release are truly amazing. They’re aiming for smooth launches of their big titles, especially those based on their most popular franchises. The report mentioned a few games that are part of this push – I can’t wait for Octopath Traveler 0 (coming December 4th!), Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined (February 2nd), and they’re even bringing Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S on January 22nd! It’s great to see them investing in these beloved series.

Square Enix also plans to release games like Killer Inn and The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, though dates for those haven’t been announced yet. Looking ahead to 2028, the company aims to launch a variety of new games on different platforms, including several major titles. Ultimately, Square Enix wants to establish a steady stream of big-budget game releases.

Square Enix plans to expand several of its popular games starting in March 2025 to attract more players. This includes continuing support for recent releases like Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles and Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, and also the planned release of Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined.
