Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment – Everything You Need to Know

When people think of The Legend of Zelda, they often picture a classic hero’s journey, a struggle between good and evil, and the dangers of unrestrained power—power that ultimately falls to bravery. These themes play out through exploring dungeons, solving puzzles, collecting powerful items, and finally, battling the main villain—or whoever is working with Ganondorf at the time.

Okay, so when I think of Hyrule Warriors, all I picture is just absolutely destroying tons of enemies – and then trying to destroy even more to get that kill counter as high as possible! You’d think a story and cool combat wouldn’t always go hand-in-hand, but there’s something really satisfying about taking down huge waves of monsters with crazy, over-the-top attacks. That’s definitely how I feel about Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, which is coming out on November 6th for Nintendo Switch 2.

So, I’ve been wondering – what makes this new Dynasty Warriors game different from all the others? I’m gonna break down everything you need to know before you decide if it’s worth picking up, and let’s start with…

It’s Canon (Really)

The official timeline for The Legend of Zelda has become quite complex, resembling a branching tree rather than a straight line. Hyrule Warriors doesn’t pay much attention to established story details. However, Age of Imprisonment is confirmed as canon – it depicts Princess Zelda traveling to the past to fight alongside King Rauru and his army during the Imprisoning War. We saw glimpses of this war in Tears of the Kingdom, and now players can experience it directly.

The Depths and Other Iconic Locations

Considering the game’s world, it’s not surprising that Age of Imprisonment will take players to places they’ve seen before, like the Depths. The developers promise it won’t be just endless running between checkpoints trying to avoid the dark, which is good news. This does make you wonder what other areas might be included – perhaps the Sky Islands? Fighting enemies while jumping between floating islands sounds fantastic!

Musou-Style Gameplay

This new Hyrule Warriors game is being developed by Koei Tecmo’s AAA Games Studio instead of the usual team, Omega Force. However, it still features the classic ‘Musou’ gameplay found in games like Dynasty Warriors: you’ll run around defeating large groups of enemies quickly and easily, with the occasional boss battle to provide a challenge. While this might feel simpler than the combat in traditional Zelda games, it’s fast-paced, satisfying, and offers a lot of action, plus…

Multiple Characters With Unique Combat Styles

Tears of the Kingdom offers a large and varied cast of playable characters. You can play as Zelda with her energy sword, Rauru with his light blasts, Queen Sonia with her bow, and even Mineru, Rauru’s sister, who uses clever mechanical creations. What’s really cool is being able to control different Sages like the Goron chief Agraston and Zora queen Qia, using their elemental powers in exciting ways. The most mysterious character is a humanoid construct that can transform and looks a lot like Link.

Bosses

As a big fan of these action games, I was really glad to see that Tears of the Kingdom didn’t skimp on the challenging bosses! They brought back some familiar faces like Frox – you really need to hit its weak spot on the back – plus Captain Constructs and the Stone Talus. And don’t even get me started on the Flux Construct! But honestly, all that is just a taste of what Ganondorf has in store for you, because he throws a ton of different forms your way, and they’re all tough battles.

Unique Skills

Feel free to jump into battle and wreak havoc, but don’t forget about the new Unique Skills! These skills can interrupt enemy attacks if used correctly, creating openings for extra damage and even allowing you to attack again immediately. It’s important to try out each character’s Unique Skill to learn when and how to use them effectively.

Sync Strikes

Seriously, experimenting with different character teams is a blast! You unlock these awesome combo attacks called Sync Strikes, and they’re way more powerful than anything you can do solo. Like, Zelda and Rauru can unleash this crazy beam attack that just keeps getting stronger, and Sonia can summon weapons for Rauru to use in a super-fast combo. Honestly, some of the weirdest pairings have the coolest benefits, so don’t be afraid to throw two unlikely heroes together and see what happens – you might be surprised!

The Zonai Have It

Zonai Devices offer a lot of options for combat. You can use things like the Flame Emitter to burn enemies, the Time Bomb for big explosions, or even the Rocket to blast through groups. Just remember to stock up on Batteries, as these devices need energy to work.

Higher Frame Rates and Many More Enemies

Let’s face it, Age of Calamity didn’t look as polished as other games in the series, mainly because of the Nintendo Switch’s hardware. With Age of Imprisonment, Nintendo has prioritized smoother performance and significantly improved graphics, adding more detail to everything. They’re also putting more enemies in battles than ever before, making them feel much more epic.

Two-Player Co-op

The Switch 2 lets up to two players enjoy split-screen gaming. You can use the new Joy-Con 2 controllers, or even use controllers from the original Switch for more flexibility.

GameShare Support

If you like playing on separate screens, you can use local wireless for cooperative play. Plus, with GameShare, even players with the original Switch can join the fun, giving you even more ways to play together.

The Biggest Hyrule Warriors Game Yet

Compared to today’s game sizes, 42.8 GB isn’t huge for Age of Imprisonment. But it’s significantly larger than previous games in the series. For example, Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition was around 12.9 GB, and Age of Calamity was only 11.1 GB. While those sizes were on the original Switch, it makes you wonder how much more content is included in the newest game.

Many Secrets to Discover

Given how much of a mystery the Imprisonment War remains, it’s no surprise that the new game will have plenty of secrets to uncover. These won’t just be nods to previous Zelda games, but could also include special weapons, hidden characters, and incredibly challenging bosses for dedicated players.

Save Data Bonuses

A new Nintendo game wouldn’t be complete without special treats for longtime fans! Players who have saved data from Age of Calamity can get the High Guard’s Claymore weapon, and those who played Tears of the Kingdom will receive the High Guard’s Sword. To claim these rewards, you’ll first need to finish the mission called “The Howling Tempests” and then return to the main world map.

Difficulty Options

Nintendo hasn’t shared specifics about difficulty settings for Age of Imprisonment, but the game’s online store page mentions you’ll be able to “Choose Your Difficulty.” The previous game had four options – Easy, Normal, Hard, and Very Hard – so we can likely expect something similar this time, and perhaps even a super-challenging difficulty level added later on.
