BioWare has faced some challenges recently, as their latest game, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, didn’t sell well and was quickly included with the basic PlayStation Plus subscription.
The studio was made smaller, but it didn’t shut down completely; instead, everyone focused on the next Mass Effect game. This game was originally announced in 2020, and unfortunately, it still doesn’t have a release date.
It’s easy to see how you might have missed N7 Day yesterday – it’s traditionally when big news about the Mass Effect series is revealed.
This year, the company could only confirm the new game is still being made. However, fans recently found some new artwork through an online puzzle game (ARG).
Executive producer Mike Gamble said:
Okay, so let’s clear things up: a new Mass Effect is definitely happening! BioWare and EA are totally committed to continuing the story in that universe. Right now, the team is laser-focused – all hands on deck for Mass Effect and nothing else. There’s so much more of the galaxy to explore, tons of cool features we want to add, and, of course, plenty of new romances to develop. We’re really excited about what we’re creating, and we promise we’ll share it with you all when it’s ready – and it’s going to be awesome!
It’s worth noting that Gamble hid a code within his blog post, and it was quickly cracked. This led to the reveal of a new artwork called ‘Civil War’.
The image (embedded) shows a battle-hardened Krogan fighting alongside his own kind.
We don’t know the details of the Mass Effect story well enough to explain this fully. However, we expect the Genophage – a devastating infertility weapon used by the Turians and a major part of the original games’ plot – will be connected to what’s happening.
We might find out more details in the upcoming Amazon Prime series, as Gamble discussed on his blog. While the script is still in progress, the show will take place after the events of the first three games. That’s something to look forward to.
And that’s it – your annual Mass Effect update. See you next 7th November, eh?
