Disney releases Christmas film from blockbuster director, as he reveals hidden Easter eggs within

Disney has announced its new holiday short film for 2025, starring John Goodman as a lovable character named Doodle.

The story revolves around a young girl who makes a Christmas list for Santa and includes a little drawing for him as well.

The next morning, as she opened her gifts, something amazing happened: her drawing magically came to life! It was a true Christmas miracle.

Although she enjoys a year spent with Doodle, it becomes obvious as Christmas nears that he wishes he could speak and share his thoughts and feelings.

The young girl wants a Mr. Potato Head so she can take out the mouth and give it to her friend, letting him talk as much as he wants.

The film is directed by Taika Waititi, the creator of last year’s popular short film, The Boy & The Octopus.

According to Waititi, what sets this movie apart as a Disney film is its focus on a child’s perspective. It’s a story about a kid and their new friend working through life’s challenges together, relying on their friendship and creativity.

John Goodman shared his love for Disney stories, explaining that they have a lasting quality and always manage to be both entertaining and touching, reminding families of what’s most important. He believes this new short film perfectly embodies that same heartwarming feeling.

Waititi explained the film is ideal for Disney enthusiasts, featuring references to beloved characters and classic movies from the past.

We love including little references to other things as Easter eggs. We actually went a bit overboard at first – one child’s bedroom looked like it was filled with merchandise from Disney! We had to tone it down a few times to make it more realistic.

The animators did a great job with Stitch’s mouth. If you look closely in the park scene, way in the background, you can spot a small ice cream cart with balloons – it’s the same one from the movie Up. Most of the hidden details, though, are inside the house, and they’re really cleverly placed.

Waititi also expressed his enthusiasm for continuing to create Disney shorts, saying he’d like to build a yearly tradition of trying out new and different ideas. He enjoys the format because it feels like making a Disney movie, but on a much faster timeline – without the years of commitment!

I enjoy crafting heartfelt stories with a touch of fantasy, exploring timeless Disney themes like the importance of friendship, self-acceptance, and putting others first – all within the shorter format of films. It allows me to combine different creative skills, which is ideal because I began my career making short films. I’ve created many shorts, and even now, I still consider short filmmaking to be a powerful and satisfying art form.

The advert ends with the core wish to “Make someone’s holiday magic”, in true Disney fashion.
