The PlayStation 5 is now more popular than the PlayStation 3 was over its entire lifespan. Sony recently announced that 84.2 million PS5 consoles have been shipped worldwide as of September 30th. Considering the console has only been available for under five years, sales are expected to continue to increase.
Sony shipped 3.9 million consoles over the last three months, which represents a modest increase of only 100,000 units compared to the same time last year. This is noteworthy considering Sony recently increased the price of both standard PS5 models and the PS5 Pro in the United States.
PlayStation Network has seen significant growth, reaching 119 million monthly active users – a jump of three million compared to last year. Total software sales for both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 reached 80.3 million units this quarter, including 6.3 million from first-party games, which is one million more than last year. Digital sales continue to dominate, now making up 72% of all software purchases.
Sony hasn’t shared many details about its future game releases beyond Saros in March 2026 and Marvel’s Wolverine this fall. However, they’re holding a State of Play presentation today at 2 PM PST, and it’s likely we’ll see announcements – especially games from Japan and Asia – that will give us a better idea of what’s coming.
