Game development is a labor of love, and it’s incredibly rewarding when players enjoy the finished product. However, not every massively multiplayer online role-playing game, or MMO, is a hit. It’s tough when a game, often created by hundreds or even thousands of people, doesn’t connect with audiences, despite all the effort put into it.
When an MMORPG struggles, it can hurt the whole industry. Unfortunately, it happens – even games made with the best intentions can fail, as not every game can reach the popularity of World of Warcraft. Deciding which games are truly the worst is often a matter of opinion, but low sales, negative player feedback, and quickly declining player numbers are clear signs of failure. Here are five MMORPGs that consistently appear on lists of the worst, presented in no specific order.
1) Final Fantasy XIV Online

Before you criticize, please note this discussion is about the very first version of Final Fantasy XIV Online, not the revamped A Realm Reborn. While the game is now fantastic, its 2010 launch was a disaster. Despite being made by Square Enix and based on a popular series, the original game was outdated, had clunky combat, suffered from server problems, and lacked an engaging story. Thankfully, Square Enix realized the issues, completely rebuilt the game, and released the much-improved A Realm Reborn.
2) Infestation: Survivor Stories

The popularity of zombies exploded in the 2010s, largely thanks to the show The Walking Dead, and this inspired many video game developers. When Infestation: Survivor Stories came out in 2012, it seemed like it would be a hit, but it ultimately disappointed players. Instead of offering the exciting zombie survival experience fans wanted, Infestation was plagued by technical issues like poor performance and blurry graphics. The game world felt empty, leaving players to wander aimlessly for long periods. Death wasn’t handled well either – players either respawned instantly or faced lengthy wait times before being dropped back into the game at a random spot. The combat system was poorly designed, making the game simply unenjoyable. The developers eventually shut down the servers in 2016, and the game is no longer playable.
3) DreamScapes Dimensions

DreamScapes Dimensions launched on Steam in 2021 as an unfinished game, and it’s still in early access today. This isn’t necessarily a negative, as it allows the developers to continue improving it – and it definitely needs work. The biggest issue is the very slow framerate, which is surprising for a modern online game. The game also feels empty because there aren’t many players, and several features are still broken even four years after its initial release. While the developers could still make DreamScapes Dimensions a fun and playable experience, it’s currently far from being enjoyable.
4) Wild West Online

Released in 2018, Wild West Online promised players a chance to experience the Old West, with bank robberies and open-world mayhem. While the game boasted stunning graphics and a beautiful environment to explore, it unfortunately fell short in other areas. Players found the character creation limited and the controls awkward. The game world felt empty, and despite its visual appeal, it couldn’t hold players’ attention due to a lack of engaging activities. Critics panned the game on Steam, ultimately leading the developer to remove it from the store. If you’re looking for a similar experience, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a much better option and is still readily available.
5) Bloodlines of Prima

The game Bloodlines of Prima had a very short life on Steam’s Early Access program, being removed just nine months and twelve days after its initial release on December 29, 2020. It wasn’t playable, despite aiming to offer a similar experience to World of Warcraft. While it looked promising, the game suffered from poor graphics and a lack of content, even in its unfinished state. After taking it down, the developers rebuilt it as Bloodlines of Prima Origins and made it available only for local (LAN) play through Discord.
