Sony recently announced that its financial forecasts for fiscal year 2025 have been lowered due to losses related to the game Destiny 2. Specifically, the company is reporting a ¥31.5 billion loss from the declining value of certain assets connected to Bungie, the studio behind Destiny 2.
During a recent earnings call, Sony’s CFO, Lin Tao, discussed challenges with Destiny 2. He explained that increased competition has put pressure on both Bungie and Sony, resulting in lower sales and player engagement than anticipated. This is particularly notable considering Sony’s $3.6 billion acquisition of Bungie in 2022.
According to Tao, Destiny 2 hasn’t performed as well as expected since Sony acquired Bungie, largely due to shifts in the competitive gaming landscape. While they plan to continue improving the game, Sony has lowered its financial forecasts and written down the value of some of Bungie’s assets.
Sony’s operating income has decreased by approximately ¥18 billion compared to last year. The company attributes this loss to weaker-than-expected performance of the game Destiny 2, along with adjustments made to previously reported development costs.
Bungie is working hard to revitalize Destiny 2 with new content. Although the game’s player base has been declining, the studio is preparing to launch the Renegades expansion on December 2nd. A recent trailer offered a glimpse of the new weapons and gear players will be able to unlock.
The trailer showed off several unique weapons, including ones inspired by Star Wars. The Uncivil Discourse, for example, is designed to resemble a blaster from the popular sci-fi franchise. Players will also have access to the Modified B-7 Pistol, which can shatter enemies into crystal shards using the Stasis element, and the powerful Refurbished A499 heavy sniper rifle.
A ViDoc released in September offered a glimpse into the story of Destiny 2: Renegades. Players will take on the role of infiltrators within a criminal network, working to help a friend haunted by their past. The narrative director, Alison Lührs, also discussed the partnership between Bungie and LucasFilm during the development of Renegades.
Lührs praised LucasFilm as fantastic partners. He explained that their success depended on identifying the common ground between compelling art and engaging storytelling. Specifically, they focused on universal themes – like the triumph of underdogs and the power of small communities – that existed at the intersection of those two elements, which ultimately guided their collaborative storytelling process.
The new Destiny 2 expansion, Renegades, will be available on PC, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. If you’re interested, you can read our review of the previous expansion, The Edge of Fate, to get caught up.
