Lois Lane is often associated with perilous situations due to her habit of seeking out stories at any cost, which frequently results in her needing rescue – a role usually fulfilled by Superman. However, it’s crucial not to stereotype Lois as merely a damsel in distress. Instead, she consistently places herself in extreme circumstances that an ordinary person would avoid completely. Her determination to expose the truth is one of the qualities that make her character so compelling. While Superman often rescues Lois, it doesn’t mean the roles are always reversed. In fact, when Superman is in trouble, Lois proves time and again to be the best person he could call for help. Far from being a damsel in distress or Superman’s sidekick, Lois is more accurately described as his partner, demonstrating her exceptional abilities to save the Man of Steel just as effectively as he saves her.
1) Psychic Power Transfer
In the storyline “Superman: Doomed”, Superman contracted a virus that was altering him into a monstrous being similar to Doomsday. Simultaneously, Brainiac was invading Earth, abducting individuals’ brains for his spaceship’s systems. Toward the end, not only had he captured Superman, but he also tried to break his spirit by showing him illusions of a perfect life. However, Lois Lane intervened when she had acquired psychic abilities due to unrelated circumstances. She mentally connected with Superman and dislodged Brainiac’s control over the spaceship, exhausting her powers in the process. This enabled Superman to escape and rescue the countless people Brainiac had imprisoned.
2) Free Him From Dominus
In the tale titled “Superman: Ruler of the Realm,” we find the Last Son of Krypton asserting dominion over Earth, aided by an army of Superman-made robots. As confusion reigned worldwide on how to counteract a tyrannical Superman, Lois remained skeptical and refused to accept this change in her beloved hero. With help from Lex Luthor, they embarked on a covert mission into the Fortress of Solitude, where they unearthed that the antagonist Dominus had been posing as Superman. Previously trapped during their last confrontation, the genuine Superman was found within the fortress. Despite his image being severely tarnished in the eyes of many, Lois’ unwavering faith in him allowed her to rescue him, and together they saved the world from destruction.
3) Stop HORDR’s Blackmail
In the “Superman: Truth” saga, the wicked group HORDR discovered Superman’s hidden identity and threatened him with blackmail. Forced into compliance, he even connected himself to a device for them to analyze his powers. However, Lois Lane couldn’t bear seeing her loved one controlled by evil forces. So, she revealed Superman’s identity to the world, effectively removing any leverage HORDR had over him. With this act, Superman broke free and was no longer bound by their commands. Though it wasn’t his preference, Lois understood that this was what he required, and she promptly assisted him in every way possible. It’s far better for the world to have a publicly known Superman rather than one under the control of a sinister mastermind.
4) Helped Him Beat a Goddess
In the single-edition comic “Superman: The Last Deity of Krypton”, the frosty deity Cythonna breaks free from her confinement and pursues Earth to make sure Krypton’s heritage perishes entirely. Upon witnessing his power, Cythonna attempts to charm Superman, even going so far as to slay a woman who carried his scent. This provokes Superman to hide Lois in the Fortress of Solitude and confront her directly. When he discovers that she is mortal, Cythonna resumes her efforts to eliminate him; however, had it not been for Lois’s intervention by commandeering a Kryptonian combat suit and aiding Superman in defeating the deity, she might have succeeded. The two ultimately collaborate to imprison Cythonna within the sun, an achievement neither could have accomplished alone. This comic highlights their remarkable cooperation when it matters most, despite Lois initially giving Clark the cold shoulder.
5) Honeymoon Kidnapping
Following Superman and Lois’ wedding, they opted for their honeymoon in the balmy, sun-kissed paradise of Hawaii. Regrettably for the most iconic duo in comics, Superman: The Man of Steel #63 underscored that no good deed goes unpunished for them. Recently depowered Clark, in The Final Night, was helpless during his abduction, but Lois wasn’t about to let anyone lay a finger on her newly-wedded husband. Utilizing her extraordinary investigative journalism abilities, she traced the kidnappers and took out numerous armed guards to rescue Clark. Not only that, but they were recaptured later in the issue, and then Lois seized a knife from an assailant’s hand and freed them both using just her feet. The cover may depict a scared Lois and a tough-as-nails Clark facing their adversary, yet this issue brims with unadulterated Lois Lane badassery. She is the one taking down thugs with guns like an action movie star, and truth be told, we need more of that. She is a force to be reckoned with, and you’d better believe she won’t be trifled with.
Five instances demonstrate Lois Lane’s heroic acts in rescuing Superman. While it’s often Superman who comes to her aid, Lois is not merely idle, waiting for him to intervene. Instead, she demonstrates remarkable self-reliance and quick action when Superman needs assistance. In truth, one could hardly find a more competent partner than Lois Lane.
