Borderlands 4’s Endgame is “Very Ambitious,” Says Creative Director

Although details about Borderlands 4’s factions, narrative, new playable characters, and modifications in loot have been shared, Gearbox Entertainment is holding back some important aspects for their upcoming looter shooter. Among these secrets lies the endgame, but creative director Graeme Timmins hinted to Game Informer that it will be exceptionally ambitious.

As a passionate gamer immersed in the world of Borderlands 3, I took great pride in crafting the elements that shaped its endgame experience. I’ve always had one foot firmly planted in understanding what matters most to our dedicated community, and I’m thrilled to say that those priorities were baked right into the game from the get-go. When it came to designing the Action Skill tree, we carefully considered not just the present, but also the exciting possibilities that lay ahead for our endgame content.

He mentioned that it’s well-known that we usually increase level caps over time, isn’t that correct? This leads to the question, ‘If this is still part of our plans, how can we adjust our Action Skill tree from the outset to ensure balance?’ He also pointed out that the total number of Skill Points in Borderlands 3, which amounted to 72, was quite substantial, don’t you think?

For Timmins, this situation led to “a considerable amount of disorder in the way those Action Skills were structured,” causing a decrease in build variety because “as more skill points are earned, since everyone is homogeneous due to sharing the same unlocked skills in the end, we’ve considered [Borderlands 4’s] endgame from the start. We have some exciting ideas for it that we’ll reveal soon.

Timins hinted at not disclosing any specifics, but emphasized that they are incorporating valuable lessons from both “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands” and “Borderlands” to ensure they deliver the finest iteration of the Borderlands endgame to date.

So far, it’s been established that players can challenge bosses again for farming loot, and this includes during the storyline itself when returning to Vaults and overcoming their Guardians serves as a means to become stronger. Additionally, you can repeat missions, but whether there will be tougher versions offering more loot is yet to be determined.

The much-anticipated release of Borderlands 4 is set for September 12th across platforms including Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. A Nintendo Switch 2 version will follow at a later date. Keep an eye out for further information about the game’s endgame in the meantime.
