While Embark Studios’ extraction shooter, ARC Raiders, has been gaining popularity, the studio has received criticism for using AI to create voiceovers in the game. In a recent interview with Game*Spark, Nexon, the studio owner, suggested that AI is now commonly used by most game developers.
During a recent interview, Nexon CEO Junghun Lee – as reported by Automaton Media – discussed how AI is now common in game development. He believes that using AI isn’t just an option for studios, but a necessity for staying competitive, even for companies like Embark Studios.
Lee believes all game companies are now using artificial intelligence. Since AI is becoming standard, the key to success isn’t having the technology, but figuring out how to stand out from the competition and build a stronger business. Choosing the right strategy is crucial for staying competitive.
Stefan Strandberg, co-founder and CCO of Embark Studios, explained how AI is used in their game, ARC Raiders. He said it’s comparable to how it’s used in THE FINALS, relying on a mix of voice actors and text-to-speech technology. Strandberg also stated that using these AI tools helps the studio build expansive game worlds even with a smaller team.
We’re a small team focused on creating detailed and immersive game worlds, and we’re doing our best to achieve that while remaining a lean operation. However, we’re not currently using AI-generated content in any other areas of the game.
Although some people have concerns about AI, it hasn’t hindered the success of ARC Raiders. Nexon announced this week that the game has sold over 4 million copies since launching on October 30th, counting sales from PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Okay, so ARC Raiders is doing really well! Not only are people buying the game, but the player numbers are awesome too. Embark Studios just announced that over 700,000 of us were playing the game at the same time last weekend – that’s a ton of raiders out there!
We’re amazed by how you’re all playing and enjoying ARC Raiders – you’ve exceeded all our expectations! You constantly surprise us with your creativity and skill, and we love the challenge. We’re incredibly grateful for your support and how you inspire us to make the game even better. Thanks for being a part of this adventure with us.
