A new series called DC Crime is coming to HBO Max, starring Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. The show will center around Jimmy and his colleagues at the Daily Planet as they investigate crimes and simultaneously film a documentary about their cases. What’s really exciting is that the series is being created by Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault – the team behind the popular Netflix mockumentary American Vandal. If it’s anything like American Vandal, this is a show DC fans won’t want to miss.
This creates a chance for Jimmy Olsen and his colleagues to look into various supervillains, potentially bringing them into the DC Universe before the heroes who usually fight them even appear.
10) Gorilla Grodd

Gorilla Grodd will be the primary villain in the first season of DC Crime. This is surprising because there’s been no indication that the Flash will appear in the DC Universe anytime soon, meaning one of his enemies is being introduced before the hero himself. It’s a little strange that Jimmy Olsen is investigating someone who typically operates out of Gorilla City, but it appears Grodd will be expanding his operations to Metropolis and building a criminal enterprise there. Regardless, it’s exciting news for fans who will finally get to see Gorilla Grodd brought to life on screen.
9) Captain Cold

Since Gorilla Grodd is the main villain in the first season of DC Crime, the show’s true crime reporters could easily interview other villains connected to him or his rivals. While the Flash likely won’t be on the series, other members of his group of enemies could appear. Captain Cold would be a fantastic choice – many DC fans already know him from shows like The Arrowverse, and an interview with him about Grodd would be really exciting.
8) Black Manta

It looks like the new DC Universe might be planning to introduce key villains before showcasing the heroes they typically battle. We could see this with an Aquaman foe like Black Manta. While Black Manta was already prominent in the previous DC films, James Gunn might be hesitant to reuse too many villains from Zack Snyder’s movies. Still, Black Manta is a compelling character, and introducing him through an investigation led by Olsen’s team could be a good way to re-establish him within the DCU.
7) Solomon Grundy

Instead of using characters from DC Crime to introduce villains from other hero stories, a more compelling approach would be to have Jimmy Olsen investigate iconic villains himself. For example, Olsen pursuing Gorilla Grodd would be great – he’d be naturally curious about such a clever, criminal mastermind. Another strong idea is to have Olsen look into Solomon Grundy, potentially leading to a more frightening, horror-focused story where he investigates swamp monster rumors and uncovers the truth. Grundy’s unique backstory would fit perfectly within the DC Crime style.
6) Killer Croc

Similar to the potential storyline with Solomon Grundy, Killer Croc could be a central figure in DC Crime. Instead of the swamps, Detective Olsen could search for Croc in the city’s sewers. This approach offers a unique opportunity to delve into Croc’s character and explore the possibility of redemption. Past Batman stories have shown Waylon Jones struggling with his monstrous form and desiring help to contain it, and focusing on that internal conflict could be a compelling way to portray this dangerous villain.
5) Mad Hatter

The most interesting villains for a potential DC Crime series would be those who aren’t already overused. They shouldn’t be completely obscure, but characters who offer new and unexpected storylines. For example, Mad Hatter recently reappeared in the animated Bat-Fam series, and a DC Crime show could bring him to live-action. His method of hypnotizing people with his hat could be cleverly integrated into a mystery, perhaps with Jimmy Olsen investigating strange crimes where people have no memory of their actions, ultimately leading him to Batman’s foe.
4) Dr. Sivana

Look, as much as I like Dr. Sivana – and he is a genuinely good villain, a real supergenius – I don’t see him popping up in James Gunn’s DCU anytime soon. It feels like Gunn wants to avoid immediately revisiting villains from the previous Shazam film, much like the situation with Black Manta. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Shazam itself is on the back burner for a while. But if they do bring Sivana back eventually? I can picture a fun storyline where someone like Jimmy Olsen starts digging into his schemes – that would be a great way to reintroduce him.
3) Doctor Light

Doctor Light is a complicated character, largely due to the controversial storyline Identity Crisis, which dramatically changed him from a comical villain into a truly frightening one by revealing his dark side. A series like DC Crime could be a perfect fit for this aspect of his character. Given that DC Crime appears to be inspired by popular true crime shows on Netflix, Doctor Light’s villainy could make him a compelling subject for an investigation led by Jimmy Olsen. The main question is whether the creators of the DC Universe and the filmmakers behind American Vandal will want to maintain a generally lighter tone for the series.
2) Count Vertigo

Count Vertigo would be a great addition to the DC Crime series. He’s a gangster with the ability to throw his opponents off balance, and he previously appeared in the Arrow TV show. It’s been a while since then, making him a familiar but revitalized character. The show would benefit from featuring lesser-known villains like him, giving the creators freedom to develop the story without being restricted by established storylines.
1) Toyman

I truly think Toyman would be the perfect villain for the DC Crime series. I think it makes so much sense for a few reasons. First, they already teased him in Peacemaker – remember when Peacemaker interviewed with the Justice Gang in one of his toy stores? It was a clever little nod! Second, Toyman targets kids, and that would give Jimmy Olsen a really strong, personal reason to investigate and take him down. Plus, he’s not some world-ending threat. He’s someone Jimmy could realistically handle himself, without needing Superman to step in and save the day. It would be great to see Jimmy really shine and solve things on his own.
