Movie ticket sales have been down recently. After October saw the lowest revenue in 27 years, experts predicted continued struggles for new releases. This past weekend, the sports biopic Christy, directed by David Michôd and starring Sydney Sweeney, had a particularly poor opening. While the film’s disappointing performance has been widely reported, one actor has publicly blamed Sweeney for its lack of success.
Ruby Rose, famous for her work in the John Wick movies and the Batwoman TV show, was originally going to be in the film but later left. After the movie came out, Rose shared her disappointment on Threads, criticizing the casting of Sydney Sweeney in a leading role representing the LGBTQ+ community, given Sweeney’s lack of personal connection to that community. Here’s what Rose had to say:
The initial script for the Christy Martin film was amazing and deeply impactful. I was set to play the character Cherry, and many of us involved actually identified as LGBTQ+. That connection was a big reason I continued pursuing acting. Losing out on roles is common in this industry. However, it was incredibly hurtful to see the film’s publicist claim it failed because of the audience, when the truth is, people don’t want to support someone who openly expresses hatred towards them while pretending to represent our community. That person is misguided and they destroyed a film that deserved to be made well. Christy Martin deserved a better outcome.
For Sydney Sweeney, ‘Christy’ Wasn’t About Box Office Success

Black Bear Pictures
Compared to other movies opening in over 2,000 theaters, the film Christy had one of the worst box office results, ranking at number 12. If you exclude movies that were re-released, Christy‘s performance actually falls to number 9. Despite the negative reviews and reports of its financial failure, actress Sydney Sweeney has expressed her pride in the film. In a recent Instagram post, she stated that the film’s message was more important than its box office numbers and that she was happy to have been involved.
Being part of this film has been a true honor. It’s a story about overcoming hardship with bravery and finding hope even in the darkest times. We’ve been able to shine a light on the issue of domestic violence and help those affected. We all believed Christy’s story could truly make a difference, and even if it inspires just one woman to seek help and find safety, we’ll consider our work a success. I’m incredibly proud of this film because we aimed to create something meaningful, not just something popular – we wanted it to have a real impact on people’s lives.
