Valve’s new Steam Frame VR headset isn’t just an update to their previous model, the Valve Index. According to Valve engineer Jeremy Selan, it’s a completely redesigned product, which is why it has a different name. This marks a significant departure from their earlier VR efforts.
Selan explained that the product is a fresh start for the company, which is why they moved away from the ‘Valve Index’ name to ‘Team Frame.’ They’re aiming to create something different—a device that isn’t just seen as another gaming accessory, but as something more. Selan wants people to approach it without pre-existing ideas about how it should be used.
The Steam Deck differs from the Valve Index primarily because it’s a self-contained gaming device – it can run games directly without needing a separate computer. The Index, however, was designed to work with an existing gaming PC.
I’m really proud of the Valve Index – Jeff and I both worked on it. However, we always saw it as something that worked best alongside a PC, rather than as a standalone device, ” he explained, referring to his colleague Jeff Leinbaugh.
The Steam Frame aims to make VR gaming smoother and easier. Unlike the Index, which required a lot of setup to connect with a PC, the Steam Frame is designed to be worn like a headset and immediately offers players a selection of games to choose from.
Selan noted that with the Valve Index, he’d always decide what game he wanted before setting up the headset. He’d choose between playing a regular game on his Steam Deck or PC, or going through the process of setting up the VR space and using the Index. Now, with the new device, he finds himself putting it on more impulsively, even before deciding on a game.
Although the company is likely preparing to launch its new VR headset, it has stated it won’t be creating a dedicated game to demonstrate what the headset can do. This is unusual, as the company usually releases its own games alongside new hardware – like Aperture Desk Job for the Steam Deck, or the popular Half-Life: Alyx. While Alyx could be played on any VR headset, it also took full advantage of the unique features of the Valve Index’s controllers.
In addition to the Steam Deck, Valve announced other gaming hardware, including the Steam Machine PC and a new Steam Controller.
