5 MCU Romances That Should Have Happened

As a huge MCU fan, I’ve always loved that amidst all the action and superheroics, there are some really great love stories. Of course, everyone remembers Tony Stark and Pepper Potts, Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter, and Peter Parker with MJ – they’re iconic! But the MCU has given us so many other wonderful couples too, like Wanda and Vision, T’Challa and Nakia, and Peter Quill and Gamora. And honestly, part of the fun is imagining who could get together – there are so many possibilities that fans are really hoping to see!

However, a few potential MCU couples never got the chance to become a reality. Here are five romantic pairings that fans would have loved to see, but probably won’t happen now.

5) Bucky Barnes and Sharon Carter

Bucky Barnes, played by Sebastian Stan, has been through a lot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and a love story could have helped him continue to heal and find redemption. Though Bucky and Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp) don’t really connect before The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, that series would have been a perfect opportunity to develop a romantic relationship between them. During their mission in Madripoor to stop the Flag Smashers, Bucky teams up with Sharon and Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), and the three share some friendly moments.

As a fan, I always thought Bucky and Sharon Carter had amazing chemistry! They’ve both lived through so much with S.H.I.E.L.D. and have complicated pasts – they just get each other in a way Steve and Sharon never did. I know Sharon being the Power Broker threw a wrench into things, but seeing them work together, I really believed they could overcome anything. Honestly, I wish the MCU had explored a romance between them instead of the short fling Sharon had with Steve. Now, with Sharon’s future uncertain, it feels like that chance has sadly passed us by, and I’m a little disappointed.

4) Captain Marvel and Maria Rambeau

Many fans would love to see a romantic relationship between Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), but a more compelling love story might have already happened on screen. In Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers and Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) formed a strong bond while working as Air Force pilots. They reconnected after Carol was thought to be dead, and their connection felt like it could have been something more than just friendship, even though it wasn’t explicitly shown.

Carol and Maria had a strong, supportive friendship before life pulled them apart. They quickly reconnected, and Maria, along with her daughter Monica Rambeau, welcomed Carol into their family. That close bond remained even after Maria passed away. While Captain Marvel doesn’t require a love interest, exploring a romantic relationship between Carol and Maria in the 1980s would have added an interesting dimension to her story.

3) Steve Rogers and Black Widow

It’s a shame Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) never became more than friends. Throughout their time as Avengers, they clearly worked well together and had a great connection. A romantic relationship could have been an interesting addition to their stories. Their chemistry is especially noticeable in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where they work closely and even share a kiss as part of a disguise. More broadly, Steve and Natasha consistently demonstrate a strong, trusting partnership and a clear affection for one another.

Steve Rogers’ relationship with Peggy Carter had already ended, naturally leading to the potential for a new romance. However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe unexpectedly paired Natasha Romanoff with Bruce Banner/Hulk in Avengers: Age of Ultron, effectively preventing a romantic connection between Captain America and Black Widow. This relationship felt forced and lacked believable chemistry, especially since many fans felt Steve would have been a better match for Natasha.

2) Valkyrie and Sif

There was a lot of speculation that Valkyrie would have a romantic partner in Thor: Love and Thunder, but that didn’t happen. Many fans believe this was a missed chance to create a relationship between Valkyrie and Sif, both strong Asgardian warriors. While they haven’t appeared together on screen yet, they would have been a great match. As leaders of New Asgard and trainers of its warriors, a romance between the fierce and loyal Valkyrie and Sif could have added a compelling dynamic. Now that Love and Thunder is finished, the easiest time to explore a relationship between them seems to have passed, and the MCU lost a chance to make its corner of the universe even more interesting with this natural pairing.

1) Druig and Makkari

The movie Eternals hints at a romantic connection between Druig and Makkari, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe likely won’t develop their relationship further. Throughout the film, these characters share a close bond, with moments of playful flirting and affectionate gestures. However, their connection isn’t as fully realized as the relationships between other couples in the film, like Ikaris and Sersi, or Phastos and Ben.

The connection between Druig and Makkari was a highlight of the Eternals movie, and many viewers wished they’d had more scenes together. A sequel might have explored a romantic relationship between them, but that now seems unlikely. If Eternals had been more successful, Druig and Makkari could have become one of the MCU’s most popular couples.
