From the very beginning, the Hulk and Thor have been the strongest members of the Avengers. For sixty years, they’ve constantly competed to be recognized as the most powerful. This competition, driven by the Hulk’s anger and Thor’s fighting spirit, often leads to huge, destructive battles. The Marvel Cinematic Universe captured this rivalry brilliantly, with some of its most memorable fights featuring these two heroes going head-to-head. When Hulk and Thor fight, their incredible strength causes massive destruction around them. Even though they’re teammates, both are proud warriors who are always up for a fight.
Over the years, the Hulk and Thor have clashed repeatedly for a variety of reasons, from mind control to simply proving who is stronger. Sometimes the Hulk wins, sometimes Thor does, and occasionally their fights end in a tie. Regardless of the cause or result, these battles are always massive, incredibly destructive, and remain the most famous confrontations between these two powerful heroes.
7) Hulk: Let the Battle Begin

Back in 2010, the Hulk and Thor had a short fight that ended with a surprisingly embarrassing defeat for Thor. It started when the Hulk, noticing Thor’s long hair, jokingly thought he was a woman. Thor, offended, tried to strike the Hulk with his hammer, Mjolnir. But Mjolnir famously only works for those who are worthy, and the Hulk doesn’t qualify. Instead, the Hulk cleverly grabbed Thor’s hand while he was holding Mjolnir. Using a classic trick – essentially telling someone to ‘stop hitting yourself’ – the Hulk forced Thor to repeatedly hit himself in the face with his own hammer until he was knocked out. It was a truly humbling moment for the God of Thunder.
6) Fear Itself #5

In the 2011 comic storyline Fear Itself, the evil Asgardian called the Serpent used seven magical hammers to control heroes and villains, turning them into his army, known as the Worthy. The Hulk was one of those affected, transforming into Nul, the breaker of worlds. This led to a brutal fight with Thor. During their battle, using the power of their enchanted hammers, Thor ultimately overpowered the Hulk and, with a massive blow, sent him hurtling into Earth’s orbit.
5) The Defenders #10

In a storyline that began in 1973, the villains Loki and Dormammu tricked the Avengers and Defenders into battling each other. This meant a confrontation between Thor, who was with the Avengers, and the Hulk, who was with the Defenders. Both heroes were sent on a mission to secure the powerful Evil Eye, hoping to keep it out of enemy hands. Thor attempted to talk to the Hulk, but the Hulk immediately attacked, refusing to negotiate. The resulting fight lasted for over an hour, completely destroying a city. Neither hero could gain the upper hand, and the battle only ended when the rest of the Avengers and Defenders intervened to separate them.
4) The Mighty Thor #385

Back in 1987, the Hulk challenged Thor to a fight, but without Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. During a particularly destructive phase, the Hulk went on a rampage through a town, prompting Thor to intervene. After a tough initial battle where the Hulk was injured, he resorted to a cruel trick: he took a woman hostage. The Hulk threatened to kill her unless Thor gave up Mjolnir. Thor reluctantly agreed, and without his hammer, he was brutally beaten by the Hulk. As soon as Mjolnir returned to Thor’s grasp, however, the Hulk fled, realizing he couldn’t win against the God of Thunder when Thor was fully armed.
3) Immortal Hulk #46-47

In the Immortal Hulk comic series, the villainous Devil Hulk takes over and battles Thor, using strange powers against him. Their first fight, in Immortal Hulk #7, ends with Devil Hulk cracking Thor’s skull with a single punch. Thor, determined to win, prepares for a rematch. This time, Thor taps into the Odinforce—the powerful energy source of his father—making himself incredibly strong. He manages to destroy Hulk’s arm with a blast of lightning. But Hulk retaliates in a shocking and gruesome way, regenerating his arm around Thor’s head. Thor would have suffocated if Black Panther hadn’t cut him free from Hulk’s flesh. It was a truly unusual and bizarre way to defeat an enemy.
2) Journey into Mystery #112

Back in 1965, a legendary battle took place between the Hulk and Thor, shocking Marvel fans. Thor, looking for a challenge during one of the Hulk’s destructive outbursts, wanted to fight him at his full power. However, Thor was under a spell that would turn him into the human Donald Blake if he dropped his hammer, Mjolnir, for more than a minute. To overcome this, Thor asked his father, Odin, to temporarily lift the enchantment for five minutes. Odin agreed, allowing the epic first duel between the two powerhouses to begin. The fight ultimately ended in a draw, but it was a huge event to see Marvel’s two strongest heroes go head-to-head for the very first time.
1) Hulk VS Thor: Banner of War

In 2022, when the Hulk was falsely accused of murder, Thor attempted to capture him. To protect Earth, Thor transported them both to an alien arena where they were forced to fight as gladiators. The battle was complicated by inner turmoil: Bruce Banner struggled to control the Hulk, and Thor was haunted by the spirit of his father, Odin. During the fight, the Hulk accidentally exposed Thor to radiation, transforming him into a gamma-powered being. To fight this new, incredibly powerful Thor, Odin granted the Hulk Thor’s powers and allowed him to wield the hammer Mjolnir. The battle ended with Odin using magic to restore Thor to normal, and both heroes walked away without a definitive victory. This was their most intense, imaginative, and emotionally resonant fight to date.
