7 Nostalgic One Piece Moments That Made You Fall in Love With the Show

Eiichiro Oda’s popular manga, One Piece, first appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997, and Toei Animation created an anime adaptation in 1999. The series has grown consistently in popularity since then, ultimately becoming the best-selling manga ever. One Piece is now in its final story arc, and the plot is becoming increasingly dramatic as more of the world’s secrets are revealed. In contrast to this complex final arc, which emphasizes detailed backstory, world-building, and intense battles, the earlier East Blue Saga was more light and fun.

This first story arc does a great job of establishing the overall plot and introducing the main characters, including what motivates them. For long-time fans, revisiting the East Blue Saga is often a nostalgic experience as they remember following the Straw Hat crew from the beginning. Although the entire arc is filled with memorable scenes, seven moments particularly stand out.

7) Zoro Solidifies His Goal By Making a Vow With Luffy

Zoro became a pirate with one goal: to defeat Dracule Mihawk, the world’s greatest swordsman, and become the strongest himself. But when they met at Baratie, Zoro was easily defeated, a loss that deeply affected him and led him to promise Luffy he’d never lose again. He’s determined to become strong enough to join Luffy’s crew as the world’s best swordsman, believing that’s what the future Pirate King deserves, and he’s committed to training relentlessly to achieve it.

This experience was a turning point for Zoro, strengthening his resolve to achieve the dream he and his friend Kuina once shared. While he’s faced defeats since then, Zoro has become much stronger, and each fight brings him closer to his ultimate goal.

6) The Famous Barrel Scene Highlights the Importance of Each Straw Hat’s Dream

By the end of the East Blue adventure, Luffy had assembled a crew of four, with many more potential members waiting to join them in future adventures. Becoming a pirate and braving the dangerous Grand Line requires incredible courage and a willingness to risk everything to achieve a dream. The Straw Hat Pirates, however, were fully prepared to face any challenge and do whatever it took to make their ambitions come true as they journeyed across the world.

The five friends made a pact, symbolized by each placing a foot on a barrel, to show fans that despite having different goals, they’d face the journey together. Since then, they’ve become a strong support system for Luffy, and he for them. They work as a team, navigating challenges and disagreements, and always striving to help each other along the way.

5) The Walk to Arlong Park Will Always Be Iconic

The crew spends a lot of time joking, arguing, and generally causing trouble. But when they need to, especially to help a friend, they become a serious threat, leaving villains with nowhere to hide. The journey to Arlong Park is a particularly famous example, showing Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, and Usopp determined to confront the villain and avenge everything Nami has suffered.

This scene really emphasized how vital Nami is to the Straw Hat crew, and demonstrated how strongly they come together when facing a serious threat. With Arlong defeated, Nami officially joined the crew, and they made it clear they wanted her and only her to be their navigator.

4) Luffy’s Smile in the Face of Death Still Resonates Today

All pirates want to find a massive treasure and become the Pirate King, but Luffy is different. He understands the dangers – achieving his dream could cost him his life – yet he’s willing to take those risks to live life exactly how he wants. He isn’t interested in riches or being famous; he craves complete freedom, and believes becoming the Pirate King is the only way to get it. Even when facing almost certain death in the same place Roger died, Luffy surprised everyone with his defiance.

He smiled peacefully, accepting that his adventure was likely over, filled with happy memories and without any regrets. Luffy remains true to himself, just as we saw in his battle against Kaido where he stated he wasn’t afraid of death. He won’t let the danger of dying stop him from fighting for what he believes in or giving up on his dreams. This smile takes on even deeper meaning after he unlocks the full power of his Devil Fruit, connecting him to the Sun God Nika, a figure known for freeing people with a joyful smile.

3) Sanji’s Heartbreaking Backstory Explains the Depth of His Character

Sanji experienced a deeply painful past before discovering a place he could call home. As a child, he worked as a cook’s apprentice with another pirate crew where he met Zeff. A terrible accident left them both stranded on an island, with no way back to their previous lives. Sanji’s backstory was so disturbing that the animation studio, Toei, heavily censored it, even altering the details of how Zeff lost his leg. For weeks, Sanji struggled to eat, and Zeff ultimately sacrificed his own leg to ensure they both survived starvation.

Sanji’s difficult past, particularly his relationship with Zeff, profoundly impacted who he became, solidifying his personality and creating a father-son bond. But his backstory goes even deeper – we later learned about his childhood, his mother’s influence, and how these early experiences shaped him. These events molded Sanji into the kind and compassionate person he is today, a trait that has remained consistent throughout the series.

2) Nami Asking For Luffy’s Help Still Makes Fans Emotional

When Nami was ten, the pirate Arlong murdered her mother right before her and her sister, Nojiko. Arlong recognized Nami’s incredible skill as a navigator and forced her to work for him, falsely promising to liberate her village if she earned 100 million berries. For eight years, she worked relentlessly for the man who had killed her mother and was now oppressing her home and the people she loved.

Desperate to protect her home, she got a tattoo matching Arlong’s and pretended to betray her people for wealth. Feeling isolated and frightened, she worked tirelessly for Arlong or raided pirate ships, only managing to scrape together a small amount of money. When Arlong revealed he never intended to free her village, she was devastated and violently slashed at the tattoo on her arm. Having always been self-reliant, it was incredibly difficult for her to finally ask Luffy for assistance. Thankfully, Luffy, destined to become the Pirate King, didn’t abandon his friend in need and kept his promise to her.

1) The Importance of Shanks Giving Luffy His Straw Hat Was Revealed Much Later

Luffy admired the pirate Shanks as a child and dreamed of becoming one himself. He accidentally ate a special fruit Shanks had with him, giving him unique abilities. Shanks saved Luffy from danger, losing his arm in the process, and gave him his treasured Straw Hat. He promised to reunite with Luffy when he became a great pirate and reclaim the hat. This encounter solidified Luffy’s ambition, and he dedicated himself to rigorous training to achieve his goal, abandoning his previous carefree ways.

He didn’t start his seafaring journey until he turned 17, feeling prepared for the difficulties ahead. The significance of this moment became clear later, as the story suggested Shanks understood the true power of the Devil Fruit and took a huge gamble on this particular child. He even entrusted the child with his treasured Straw Hat, a gift from his own mentor, Gol D. Roger.
