New Dragon Ball Anime Gives Gotenks One Last Shot at Redemption

Gotenks hasn’t been as powerful or relevant since the beginning of Dragon Ball Super. He really hasn’t bounced back after losing to Beerus in Battle of Gods. Even when the Dragon Ball Super manga focused on Trunks and Goten during the Super Hero Saga, people continued to criticize Gotenks’ abilities.

It’s a shame that Gotenks, who was incredibly powerful when he first appeared during the Buu Saga in Dragon Ball Z, hasn’t lived up to his potential. He still has the chance to become the hero he was meant to be in future Dragon Ball Super stories. However, it’s unclear if Dragon Ball Super will even continue. While the manga’s future is uncertain, a new Dragon Ball anime announcement could create unexpected opportunities for Gotenks, exciting fans.

Gotenks Fans Can’t Count on Dragon Ball Super’s Return Anymore

A major story arc for Gotenks seems likely now that the Dragon Ball Super manga is back. Although Goten and Trunks struggled with the fusion throughout the Super Hero saga, there was a hint of progress. During their battle with Gohan on Beerus’ planet, it was shown that they’ve been practicing their fusion technique.

Throughout the Super Hero Saga, Gotenks’ unsuccessful fusion attempts were used for comedic effect. Goten and Trunks hadn’t been training much, so their failure to fuse properly highlighted how out of practice they were. However, Gohan noticing their improved skills during a practice fight showed they were finally getting back on track. If they participate in the upcoming battle against Black Frieza in the Dragon Ball Super manga, it’s highly likely they’ll be able to successfully fuse into Gotenks this time around.

The biggest worry for fans of Gotenks is that we might not ever see the Black Frieza Saga adapted. The future of the Dragon Ball Super manga currently appears uncertain.

The creator of Dragon Ball Super is taking a break from working on anything related to Dragon Ball for the rest of 2025. He recently created a short story called Lost Samurai and a drawing for the Gundam series. Both the artist and his editor at V-Jump magazine have stated that the Dragon Ball Super manga won’t be continuing at least through the end of the year. Without any new details, the future of the Dragon Ball Super manga appears uncertain.

I’m so excited for the future of Dragon Ball! It’s definitely not over, thankfully. Akio Iyoku, the CEO of Capsule Corp Tokyo, is planning two huge announcements in January 2026, and since they own the rights to the anime, I have a feeling these are going to be massive for the franchise!

Gotenks Has a Second Chance at the Spotlight in a New Dragon Ball Anime Storyline

Although it seems unlikely Gotenks will appear in the Black Frieza Saga due to ongoing legal issues with the DBS manga, a recent announcement offers a new hope. Iyoku’s upcoming anime reveal at the Genkidamatsuri event could open doors for Gotenks’ return. A new anime project, particularly one separate from the Dragon Ball Super arcs (which didn’t focus much on Gotenks), suddenly makes his reappearance a possibility again.

This new anime series might be a continuation of Dragon Ball DAIMA. Iyoku, who previously worked as an executive producer on DAIMA, pitched the idea for a new Dragon Ball anime to Toriyama while he was making the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie.

The playful and adventurous style of DAIMA already leans towards younger characters, and trying to repeat that approach in a sequel could feel unoriginal. A better idea for DAIMA 2 would be to center the story on Dragon Ball‘s existing young characters – like Goten, Trunks, and Gohan, who is still a teenager during DAIMA’s events.

A new Dragon Ball anime, especially if it’s a follow-up to the DAIMA arc and moves away from the storyline of Dragon Ball Super, could be the perfect opportunity to make Gotenks a powerful and important character again. During the DAIMA timeline, Gotenks would still be incredibly strong – he already mastered the Super Saiyan 3 form while Vegeta was just reaching it during the Buu Saga. This naturally makes him a valuable fighter, which is key for any main character in Dragon Ball. While it would have been great to see Gotenks get a new transformation in Dragon Ball Super, seeing a Super Saiyan 4 version of Gotenks in a DAIMA-based anime would be just as amazing.
