Following Deadpool & Wolverine, many viewers are hoping Marvel will make another movie with a mature rating. For nearly 20 years, most Marvel films and series have been rated PG-13, which some longtime fans find limiting. Luckily, Marvel has a lot of compelling characters who could carry a more adult-oriented story.
Several Marvel heroes, with their dark pasts or incredibly powerful abilities, are well-suited for a more adult, R-rated movie. If Marvel wants to appeal to a mature audience, focusing on characters like Yelena Belova, Ghost Rider, or the Hulk could be a great way to do it.
The Punisher’s Crimes Are Often Gruesome
When people think of characters driven by revenge, The Punisher immediately comes to mind. After his family was tragically taken from him, Frank Castle dedicated his life to relentlessly hunting down criminals. While the TV series delves into his story, it doesn’t always fully show the extent of his brutal methods.
The Punisher targets criminals of all levels, from small-time thieves to truly dangerous offenders, and his punishments are often as brutal as the crimes they committed. He’s known for extreme acts, like abandoning a helpless, amputee woman in a polar bear enclosure and horrifically torturing a sex trafficker by removing his intestines and leaving him alive. While these scenes might be exciting in a movie, they would certainly earn it an R-rating.
Daken Is A Dangerous Mutant Who Only Knows Hate
With Wolverine finally starring in a mature, R-rated movie, the door is now open for his more dangerous offspring to get the same treatment. Akihiro, also known as Daken, shares Logan’s powers, but also has the ability to control people using pheromones. He was trained from birth by Romulus to be a ruthless assassin.
I’ve always found Daken fascinating, but honestly, the guy never really had a chance to develop a sense of right and wrong. He was practically raised to be Wolverine’s enemy and to ignore everything good about him. Combine that with his abilities, and you’ve got someone seriously dangerous. But what really gets me is his history – he was never shown any kindness, constantly bullied by his family and everyone in his village. It’s a really tragic story, and I always thought it would make an amazing revenge movie.
Elektra Natchios Is A Tragic Figure Marked by Violence
Elektra Natchios has always been a complex and often violent hero. From a young age, she was trained as an assassin, driven by loss and anger. While she’s attempted to change her ways, her life remains filled with brutal fights and difficult choices stemming from her willingness to operate in the gray areas of morality.
If Marvel wants to revive Elektra after Jennifer Garner’s character seemingly died, they need to fully embrace the darker, more violent aspects of her history. Elektra is, at her core, a ruthless assassin, and a gritty, action-packed film exploring her troubled past is the best way to portray her accurately.
Elsa Bloodstone Is A Foul-Mouthed Monster Hunter
Elsa Bloodstone, who was introduced in Werewolf by Night, deserves a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe – and a movie that isn’t afraid to be scary. She hunts truly terrifying monsters, and an R-rated horror film is the best way to show just how frightening they are.
An Elsa Bloodstone movie would likely be rated R, meaning it wouldn’t be appropriate for children. While Elsa has a sense of humor, she’s not afraid to use strong language or get violent when facing her enemies. Her stories are intense and contain mature themes and language, making her a good choice for Marvel to begin exploring more adult-oriented content within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Ghost Rider’s Transformation Would Make For Great Cinema
Like the Punisher, many fans believe Ghost Rider—whether it’s Johnny Blaze or Robbie Reyes—needs a dark, R-rated approach for any new movie or series. The character—a flaming skull on a motorcycle who delivers fiery justice—is best suited for intense, scary storytelling. It’s a character built for truly edgy horror.
A Ghost Rider movie with an R-rating could really explore the character’s demonic side and the terrifying physical transformation he undergoes – the burning skin, breaking bones, and the horrific effects of his Penance Stare on those he punishes. It could also delve into the mental and emotional struggles of becoming Ghost Rider, adding a disturbing psychological layer to the story.
Typhoid Mary Protected Herself From The Daily Horrors Of Her Childhood
Mary Walker experienced severe abuse from her father starting in infancy. This trauma deeply affected her, leading to the development of psychic and pyrotechnic powers. As the abuse worsened, she began using fire defensively, eventually leading to her confinement in a mental institution. There, doctors discovered a dangerous alter ego, known as Typhoid Mary, who emerged whenever Mary felt threatened and needed to protect herself.
The story of Typhoid Mary is both deeply sad and genuinely frightening, making it perfect for a horror film. A movie exploring the connection between her past trauma and the power she developed – showing her internal struggle as Mary and then her transformation into Typhoid Mary – could be incredibly compelling. To truly capture the power of her story, though, the film would need to address the most disturbing details of her upbringing.
Daimon Hellstrom Is The Son of the Devil
Daimon Hellstrom is the son of Satan, making him a direct descendant of a dark and ancient lineage. His birth was the result of a deal where his mother was given to a secret occult group so Satan would claim her as his own. This unique parentage gives Daimon incredible power – he is currently the ruler of Hell.
Daimon Hellstrom’s stories are too dark and mature to work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe unless introduced in a film geared towards adult audiences. He investigates demonic possessions, performs exorcisms, and interacts with frightening creatures – all themes that would need to be handled with a certain level of intensity. Trying to make his stories more family-friendly would likely result in a weak and unsatisfying movie.
X-23 Has Gone Through A Lot
Many people see X-23 as simply a female version of Wolverine, but Laura Kinney has a unique and difficult past. Created using Logan’s DNA, she was held captive and trained as an assassin, enduring harsh treatment. Even after escaping, she didn’t find safety, and was instead exploited by a man who forced her to work for him.
I’ve been a huge fan of Laura’s story, and it’s amazing to see how much she’s grown! Honestly, the tough things she went through are what made her the hero we all adore. I’m really hoping Dafne Keen gets to play her again in the MCU – I think they could finally give us a version of the character that’s truer to the comics and a little more grown-up. It wouldn’t be easy to watch her deal with everything, but I think it would make for a truly powerful and unforgettable movie.
Magik Was Kidnapped by A Demon As A Child
When Illyana Rasputina was just six years old, she was kidnapped by the demon Belasco. He twisted a piece of her soul into a Bloodstone, granting her immense power while ensuring his continued control. For years, Illyana – known as Magik – was held captive in Limbo, a terrifying dimension filled with monstrous beings, where Belasco brutally trained her alongside his followers.
Magik’s origin story is dark and compelling – perfect for a movie, if it can handle a mature rating. The idea of a child adopted and tormented by demons, only to become their ruler, is a powerful narrative. After the disappointing attempt with New Mutants, Magik deserves another live-action adaptation, and this time, it shouldn’t shy away from the story’s darker elements.
Hulk’s Comics Story Is Hard to Digest
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has featured Bruce Banner and the Hulk, but many fans feel the character’s story hasn’t been fully explored. Compared to other heroes, Hulk hasn’t received as much focus, and the movies have left out important parts of his backstory – like the childhood abuse from his father that originally led to his transformation.
Beyond overlooking the darker parts of Bruce Banner’s history, the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t fully explored the potential of the Hulk character. Comic book storylines like The Immortal Hulk – which focuses on the terrifying physical side of his transformations – and Hulk: The End – which examines Bruce’s lack of control when he Hulks out – could significantly improve how the MCU portrays the character and add depth to his story.
