NCSoft recently announced they’re making an online multiplayer game based on the Horizon series. But it appears Guerrilla Games, the original creators of Horizon, are also developing their own multiplayer game based on the franchise, and it’s expected to be their next big project.
Jason Schreier clarified online that the new MMO announced by NCSoft, called Horizon, is a separate game from the multiplayer Horizon game currently being developed by Guerrilla Games. He confirmed that Guerrilla’s Horizon is their next major project.
It’s unclear if the new multiplayer game from Guerrilla Games is a complete sequel or a smaller experience like the ‘Legends’ mode in Ghost of Tsushima. However, reports suggest it’s a large-scale project, indicating it will likely be a substantial and detailed multiplayer game, not just a simple add-on.
Guerrilla Games is well-known for its single-player adventures like Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West, but the studio actually has a history with multiplayer games. They first gained recognition during the PlayStation 3 era with the Killzone series, which included both story-driven campaigns and detailed, competitive multiplayer modes that highlighted their first-person shooter skills.
Before creating the Horizon series, Guerrilla Games last worked on the Killzone: Shadow Fall game.
NCSoft recently announced Horizon Steel Frontiers, a new multiplayer game coming to PC, iOS, and Android. While a release date hasn’t been set, NCSoft says the game will build on the popular Horizon series with fresh, new gameplay.
During the announcement, executive producer Sung-Gu Lee explained that they’ve introduced new and innovative ways to defeat the massive machines in the game. For instance, players can now use a Pullcaster to quickly climb onto a damaged machine after breaking off a specific part, then place traps on that weak spot to inflict special effects.
The game will let players heavily customize their characters, with options for body type, hair, makeup, and even their tribe – choosing between the Nora, Tenakth, Utaru, and Oseram.
According to Lee, everyone gets to be a hero in Horizon Steel Frontiers. The game features extensive customization options, letting players truly express themselves with even the smallest details. When creating your character, you’ll be able to choose from the tribes established in the original Horizon game.
NCSoft has revealed they’re heavily using artificial intelligence in the creation of Horizon Steel Frontiers, including for both coding and art. They also point out that AI tools are becoming increasingly popular throughout the game development industry and expect to see even wider adoption in the future.
