Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, The Odyssey, is generating buzz not only because it’s directed by the acclaimed filmmaker, but also thanks to its incredible cast. Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, the movie boasts a lineup of well-known actors, many of whom have collaborated with Nolan in the past. While audiences know the film is packed with Hollywood stars, details about their specific roles have been largely a secret – until now. Universal Pictures has begun to share some first looks and information about the eagerly awaited movie.
Empire magazine recently highlighted the upcoming film The Odyssey and released two new photos. The first image reveals Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Odysseus’s wife, and Mia Goth as Melantho, one of the maids. The second photo shows Tom Holland as Telemachus, Odysseus’s son. While Holland appeared in a teaser shown in theaters this summer, this is the first official still of him released. You can view the photos below.

Odysseus’ Family Plays a Key Role in The Odyssey
Though The Odyssey primarily follows Odysseus’ difficult ten-year journey home after the Trojan War, the story also deeply involves his family. Specifically, the film should give significant attention to the experiences of Penelope and their son, Telemachus, who is actually the focus of the first four books of the original poem. Early set photos showed actor Barry Keoghan (Holland) filming scenes on a boat, likely depicting Telemachus’ voyage to Pylos in search of his father. While it’s unclear exactly how Christopher Nolan has adapted the story, Telemachus’ quest appears to be a major part of the film’s plot.
I’m really excited about the potential for Anne Hathaway in this Odyssey adaptation. While Odysseus is on his journey home, Penelope—Hathaway’s character—isn’t just waiting around. She’s got a whole lot going on, fending off numerous suitors who want her hand in marriage, but she’s holding onto hope that Odysseus is still alive and will return. The studio’s decision to feature both Hathaway and Mia Goth in promotional images feels very intentional, hinting at the importance of Penelope’s storyline and her relationships within the larger narrative. In Homer’s original poem, the dynamic between Penelope and Melantho is incredibly complex, and I think that could translate to something truly captivating on screen.
To truly capture the epic story of The Odyssey, a lot of work went into the film’s production, but fans can rest assured no part of the story was rushed. Director Nolan told Empire that he filmed more than two million feet of film, giving him ample material to develop the characters and plot fully. Known for his longer films, like Oppenheimer, The Odyssey is expected to be approximately three hours long, making good use of all the footage shot.
Since Penelope and Telemachus are featured in the new images from The Odyssey, they should also be prominently shown in the upcoming trailer. A short teaser for The Odyssey is expected to be shown before Avatar: Fire and Ash in December. While a full, detailed trailer isn’t ready yet, the teaser will likely give viewers a general idea of the story. As Odysseus’ family is central to The Odyssey, fans are eager to see Penelope and Telemachus when the footage is released.
