Ten Years Later, Fantastic Four Star Says Reboot Failed Because One Person “Kind of F-ed It Up”

Marvel’s First Family, the Fantastic Four, has historically been challenging to adapt into successful movies. After a short-lived film series in the mid-2000s, a reboot titled Fantastic Four came out in 2015. However, it wasn’t well-received and only earned $167.8 million worldwide, effectively ending the franchise before it could gain momentum. Despite featuring a strong cast, the film, also known as Fant4stic, didn’t live up to expectations, and actor Miles Teller believes one individual was largely responsible for its failure.

While on Andy Cohen’s Sirius XM radio show, actor Miles Teller discussed his time working on the movie Fantastic Four. He expressed disappointment with how the film turned out, noting that many people put a lot of effort into it, but that one key individual may have been responsible for its failure. Teller also remembered telling a studio executive that he worried the movie was going to be a problem after seeing an early cut.

Fantastic Four Was Plagued By Behind-the-Scenes Problems

When the reboot of Fantastic Four was announced, fans were initially thrilled. Director Josh Trank had gained attention for his work on Chronicle, and the cast included promising actors like Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, and Miles Teller. However, the film faced problems from the beginning. Writer Jeremy Slater recently explained that he and Trank disagreed on the movie’s overall style – Slater wanted a fun, action-packed superhero story similar to The Avengers, while Trank preferred a darker, more serious approach. Adding to the difficulties, the film’s budget was repeatedly cut, making it even harder for the team to create the movie they envisioned.

Though he doesn’t mention anyone specifically, director Josh Trank’s recent comments have sparked speculation about who he’s referring to. Following the poor reception of Fantastic Four, reports surfaced about Trank becoming disengaged during filming, with some claiming he lost creative control as the movie struggled. Trank has since discussed his difficult experience with the film, and reports suggest he lacked strong direction, contributing to its problems. It seems a different director might have been able to successfully complete the project, as actor Jamie Kebbell has pointed to poor studio leadership as the reason the film didn’t succeed.

The report about problems with director Josh Trank also included a crew member’s comment that the movie Fantastic Four was a flawed idea from the start, and was only made to ensure 20th Century Fox kept the rights to the characters. Considering how much influence studio executives have on big-budget films, Miles Teller’s comments about someone being difficult could easily be about one of them. Fantastic Four was such a troubled production that it’s hard to blame any single person for its failures.

The 2015 Fantastic Four movie didn’t succeed, which was a shame. It came out during a time when superhero films were incredibly popular, and even lesser-known characters were becoming big hits. A well-made Fantastic Four movie could have been huge, particularly with the talented cast involved. While the team eventually got a great movie adaptation, it’s still interesting to imagine what Teller and the rest of the cast could have done with the characters if given a better chance to develop their vision.
