Many popular shonen anime, like Dragon Ball, One Piece, My Hero Academia, and Jujutsu Kaisen, are known for their epic battles. However, not all anime from Weekly Shonen Jump follow this formula. Dr. Stone is a recent example of a hugely successful manga that focuses more on intelligence and problem-solving than fighting. Sadly, the anime adaptation of Dr. Stone is coming to an end, and TMS Entertainment has released a new trailer offering a glimpse of the final arc featuring Senku and his friends as they face the conclusion of their post-apocalyptic journey.
For years, Dr. Stone has been hinting at how humanity was trapped within individual stone prisons, and while the manga already reached its final chapter in recent years, the anime adaptation has been speeding toward its source material. Along with the new trailer, TMS shared a synopsis for the final part of the final season, stating, “The teaser trailer shows Senku and Xeno teaming up to finally head into space to confront Whyman, who holds the key to solving the mystery of the petrification ray. The final story, which will determine the revival of all humanity, will be broadcast in 2026!” While Dr. Stone Science Future has yet to reveal when precisely it will arrive next year, it enters a packed anime market that is promising major comebacks across the board.
The Success of Stone
Although there aren’t plans for a follow-up series to Dr. Stone after its conclusion, creators Riichiro Inagaki and Boichi acknowledge the story’s popularity. Boichi, the manga artist, recently shared his thoughts on why Senku and his friends became so successful as an anime, stating that manga’s ability to entertain through a wide range of genres is a key factor. He believes this variety naturally attracts a broad audience, including readers from other countries who can find genres they enjoy.
Although Boichi and Riichiro Inagaki have moved on from working on Dr. Stone, they are both still active in the manga world. Inagaki is currently writing Trillion Game, which has been successful as both an anime and a live-action series. Boichi, meanwhile, has contributed to the One Piece universe with a spin-off about Luffy’s brother, Ace. He’s also launched his own original series, The Marshal King, a Western-themed adventure that began publication earlier this year. It’s still early days for The Marshal King, so an anime adaptation isn’t confirmed, but given the creators’ track record with Dr. Stone, it’s definitely a possibility.
