Sony Pictures, the studio known for the Jumanji films, is planning a movie based on Labubu, a popular line of collectible plush toys that gained traction in 2025. The studio hopes to launch a full franchise based on the Labubu characters.
It’s currently unknown if the Labubu movie will be animated or live-action, and no producer or director has been announced yet. The Labubu monster figurines became even more popular after Chinese company Pop Mart began handling their production and distribution in 2019.
Labubu’s popularity is heavily influenced by how it’s sold. Pop Mart uses “blind boxes” – similar to surprise packs found with comics or other collectibles. Customers don’t know which toy they’re getting, and sometimes they find a rare, highly desirable one. This creates high demand and a thriving resale market where collectors will pay a lot for those hard-to-find Labubu figures.
Labubu’s popularity has also grown because celebrities have been seen wearing them as fashion statements. For instance, Lisa from the K-pop group Blackpink has been spotted with one.
Sony Adds Labubu to Its Roster Alongside Jumanji and KPop Demon Hunters
Sony Pictures is considering two main approaches for a Labubu movie: a live-action film like Jumanji, or an animated movie similar to KPop Demon Hunters. A recent table read with Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan reportedly had everyone laughing.
We’ve started filming the next Jumanji movie! The team is thrilled to be back together for another adventure. It’s going to be amazing!
The next Jumanji movie, likely titled Cross-Platform, will be the final installment in the series. Dwayne Johnson has announced that filming will happen in Los Angeles, with the movie expected to come out around Christmas 2026.
Netflix asked to have its film considered for an award, pointing to its limited showings in cinemas. However, the request was turned down because the film didn’t meet the rules, which require a movie to be shown commercially in UK cinemas for at least seven days total, with a minimum of ten screenings.
With Labubu, Sony is aiming for the same success seen with toy-based movies like Barbie and The Lego Movie, hoping it continues that positive momentum.
