James Gunn’s Superman movie was a huge success this summer, earning over $616 million worldwide. Because of this success and positive reviews, a sequel has already been approved. Gunn is now working on Man of Tomorrow, scheduled to begin filming this spring and release in July 2027. The movie’s main draw will be Superman teaming up with his enemy, Lex Luthor, to battle Brainiac. Fans are also eager to see how the film fits into the overall story of the DC Universe. Gunn has said the finale of Peacemaker Season 2 is important for understanding the Man of Tomorrow story, and a key character from that finale will return in the new movie.
I was thrilled to read in The Hollywood Reporter that I’ll be back as Rick Flag Sr. for Man of Tomorrow! I can confirm my character has a significant role in the story, which is really exciting. I’m keeping the specifics under wraps for now, but let’s just say Rick Flag Sr. is definitely involved.
Rick Flag Sr. Is Important to the DCU’s Future

Given the events of Peacemaker Season 2, it makes sense that Rick Flag Sr. will be a major character in Man of Tomorrow. In the show, he teamed up with Lex Luthor to find Peacemaker and a dimensional portal, which ultimately led to the discovery of Salvation. James Gunn has indicated that Salvation and the relationship between Rick Flag and Lex Luthor will continue to be important in future stories, including Man of Tomorrow, arriving in 2027. Gunn has even suggested Man of Tomorrow could focus heavily on Lex Luthor, so it will be interesting to see how their partnership evolves.
While Man of Tomorrow won’t resolve every question left hanging after the Peacemaker finale—like what happens to Christopher Smith—it can’t ignore the huge developments surrounding Salvation. Peacemaker Season 2 was designed to directly connect to the story of Superman, and Man of Tomorrow will do the same. As conflict grows between the government and people with superpowers, Superman will likely address both Salvation and the questionable ethics of the prison. Considering his past with ARGUS, Rick Flag Sr. is a natural choice to represent the government, which is one of the three main groups James Gunn is building within the DCU. The other two are corporations and metahumans, and Man of Tomorrow will involve all of them.
It’s worth watching to see if Flag somehow played a part in the arrival of the villain from Man of Tomorrow. Brainiac’s main goal is to collect all the knowledge he can, and he does this by traveling the universe, shrinking cities, and preserving them before destroying the planets they’re on. Now that Earth has discovered how to travel between dimensions, Brainiac might be very interested in what we have to offer, as it would give him access to countless new worlds. If Earth is threatened because of this new ability, Flag might feel responsible and even reconsider his actions.
It’s great to see Frank Grillo get a more substantial role in the DC Universe, no matter how his character, Rick Flag Sr., is involved in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow story. He previously played Brock Rumlow/Crossbones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that character didn’t get much development before being killed off in Captain America: Civil War. Grillo has already made a strong impact with his initial appearances in the DCU, and he has the potential to become a truly iconic character as the franchise unfolds.
