Pierce Brosnan Shares Promising Update for Doctor Fate’s Return in DCU

Pierce Brosnan shared a promising update about Doctor Fate and a potential return in the DCU.

Pierce Brosnan played Kent Nelson, also known as Doctor Fate, in the 2022 film Black Adam. The movie was intended to shake up the power dynamics within the DC Universe, but negative reviews and low ticket sales ended hopes for a sequel. To make matters worse, James Gunn and Peter Safran later decided to completely restart the DC Universe, leaving the future of Black Adam‘s characters uncertain.

In a recent interview with GQ, Pierce Brosnan said he’s not actively seeking to play Doctor Fate again, but he wouldn’t rule out returning to the role.

What did Pierce Brosnan say about a return as Doctor Fate in the DCU?

I’ve never had to aggressively pursue roles, people know how to reach me,” Brosnan explained. He’d also heard rumors about Doctor Fate potentially getting his own TV series or film, and that the character might appear in the next Superman movie.

Brosnan said he had a lot of fun playing the character and appreciated the character’s thoughtful nature, adding that he’d be happy to reprise the role if asked.

As a huge DC fan, I was really excited to spot Doctor Fate as a mural in the Hall of Justice in Superman! James Gunn actually confirmed it was a deliberate nod on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Knowing how much Gunn cares about the details of this new DC Universe, it definitely feels like a hint that we might see Pierce Brosnan reprise the role again, maybe even in Man of Tomorrow. It’s a cool little Easter egg that gets me hopeful for more of Doctor Fate!

Man of Tomorrow is the follow-up to the 2025 Superman movie and the next chapter in James Gunn’s planned Superman story. The film will feature an unlikely alliance between Superman and Lex Luthor as they confront a new, major threat: the villain Brainiac.

Man of Tomorrow begins shooting in 2026. It will be released in theaters on July 9, 2027.
