A common problem with older TV shows is the difficulty of securing music rights – often, these rights are more complex than the rights to the show itself. For years, shows like Miami Vice and Moonlighting weren’t available on streaming services because of issues with the music they featured. Recently, a popular show from 2000 faced a similar situation – while the show itself could stream, its soundtrack wasn’t available on platforms like Spotify or Apple Music. That changed this weekend when the soundtrack to Stars Hollow finally became available for streaming.
For years, fans of Gilmore Girls have been unable to find the show’s iconic music on streaming services. The music was created by composer Sam Phillips, and its unavailability has been a frequent complaint. Now, after 25 years, Phillips has officially released the Gilmore Girls soundtrack on both streaming platforms and as a physical album.
That famous song, often associated with Gilmore Girls, is included on an 18-track album now available from composer Sam Phillips. You can find it on Spotify and Apple Music, and it’s available for pre-order on vinyl, CD, and even cassette! All physical copies are being released through Mutant, the company founded by Elijah Wood and former Mondo team members, and they’re offering a special edition vinyl with an ‘autumn leaves’ design.
Composer Phillips jokingly said she’d be overjoyed if she received a new episode of Gilmore Girls for every request she’s gotten over the years to release the show’s music. Thankfully, Warner Bros. Television/WaterTower Music has now asked her to create an official album of the music for fans, which she’s thrilled about (according to People).
While creating the album, I felt completely immersed in the cozy, quirky world of Stars Hollow – like I was right there with all the coffee, snacks, and small-town drama. I really hope these songs transport listeners back to Lorelai and Rory’s world, and to the Gilmore universe we all adore.
