Okay, so if you’re a SpongeBob fan like me, you know there’s always a new game coming out! SpongeBob and Patrick have been in a TON of games over the years, and it doesn’t look like that’s going to stop. Just last year, Patrick got his own game, and now both he and SpongeBob are teaming up in a new one called Titans of the Tide, which is coming out on November 18th. I’m pretty excited about it!
Titans of the Tide is a traditional SpongeBob platformer game, similar to other recent titles like Battle for Bikini Bottom: Rehydrated and The Cosmic Shake. In this adventure, SpongeBob gets caught between a fight between The Flying Dutchman and King Neptune, turning him into a ghost. He and Patrick then have to work together to save Bikini Bottom and change it back from its ghostly form. With a classic SpongeBob story and fun, yet challenging gameplay, this is a great platformer for any fan of the show.

The game introduces a new adventure for SpongeBob when a battle between King Neptune and the Flying Dutchman transforms him and Bikini Bottom into ghosts.
This game is designed to be fun for everyone, so it prioritizes gameplay over a complex story. At its heart, Titans of the Tide is a well-made platforming game. It offers players lots of puzzles and challenges, along with a variety of helpful tools. I particularly enjoyed how the game gradually introduced new abilities and puzzle types, keeping the gameplay fresh and engaging. Each new area provides SpongeBob and Patrick with new tools and ways to move around, so you’re always learning something new and never stuck doing the same thing for long.
The Friendship Rings allow SpongeBob and Patrick to trade places, switching who is a ghost. In the game Titans of the Tide, players have to constantly switch between them to solve puzzles. Some challenges need SpongeBob’s abilities, like blowing bubbles, while others require Patrick’s strength, such as lifting heavy items. This swapping mechanic adds a new challenge to the platforming, often requiring quick thinking and skillful timing while jumping.
I thought the combat was generally simple but really enjoyable! The boss fights were a highlight – each one felt special because they had their own little puzzles to figure out, which was way more interesting than just fighting the regular ghost enemies while running around. I did notice that it felt like Patrick’s powers were a bit stronger and more useful than SpongeBob’s, and that didn’t feel totally fair. Still, there were enough bosses that needed you to play as SpongeBob that it wasn’t a big deal overall.
Generally, you progress through each level by overcoming obstacles and defeating ghost enemies. You’ll break down walls, use magical lanterns to make objects appear and disappear, and bounce to higher areas with springboards. While jumping and navigating platforms is the main focus, Titans of the Tide also includes collectibles and optional quests to keep things interesting. You can find unique costumes, catch jellyfish, and even race Larry the Lobster. These aren’t required to finish the game, but they offer extra challenges for players who like to collect everything.

This is mostly a good thing, creating a well-rounded platforming experience. However, very young players or those new to gaming might occasionally need assistance.
Successfully switching between SpongeBob and Patrick at the correct time is crucial for completing some of the game’s puzzles without having to start over. It requires fast reflexes, especially if you’re playing with a controller. I also found that if you’re using a PC and a DualSense controller that isn’t fully supported, the on-screen prompts might not always be accurate. While experienced platformer players will be familiar with this type of challenge, others might find it frustrating due to frequent setbacks and falling.
The game can be a little frustrating at times due to repeated dialogue. For example, Patrick constantly yells “Underpants!” whenever you gain an extra life. While you can always turn the sound off, this repetition feels geared more towards a younger audience.
