A fantastic video game adaptation of John Carpenter’s Escape From New York was unfortunately never released, and recently discovered details reveal what fans missed out on. Despite being a beloved action film, the 1981 classic has only received a board game and a couple of cancelled spin-offs, including at least two video games. Fans have long hoped to play as Snake Plissken in a full-fledged game, and while the latest attempt was cancelled earlier this year, this new leak gives us a look at how it might have played.
On November 17, 2025, Hector Ze Diekomen posted 18 videos online showing over an hour of gameplay from the unfinished game Escape From New York. Developed by Slipgate Ironworks (part of Embracer Group), the videos reveal early stages of development with basic graphics and unfinished areas. Despite being cancelled before completion, the footage showcases weapons, character movements, a wireframe version of New York City, and other in-game elements. Based on what’s shown, the game appeared to be staying true to the original movie.
Over an Hour of Gameplay Reveals the Escape From New York That Could Have Been

The game, which had been in development for a while, was cancelled in January 2024. Initially, the reason given was “problems with how the game was being made,” but the situation was actually more serious. Embracer Group significantly reduced its workforce as part of a larger restructuring, leading to widespread layoffs. This restructuring caused several of their studios to close, multiple projects to be cancelled, and many people to lose their jobs. The changes were prompted by a $2 billion deal with a company that hasn’t been publicly named.
When the game was canceled due to restructuring, it appeared to be completely finished. Luckily, leaked files revealed some of the game’s content from when development stopped. Although the leaks aren’t comprehensive, the videos posted online offer a lot of insight. These videos showcase early versions of the game, including its maps, characters, weapons, and animations. They also reveal the characters’ abilities and unfinished gameplay mechanics. One video even shows 15 minutes of actual gameplay, giving a good idea of what the completed game could have been.
Had it been finished, Escape From New York: The Game would probably have featured both cooperative and multiplayer gameplay, built using the Unreal Engine 5. Players would have chosen from at least three different characters to explore the game’s levels. Sadly, due to its unfinished state when development stopped, it’s doubtful the game will ever be finished. While there’s still a small chance it could happen, it would likely require being sold to a different company, which would probably mean starting over with much of the existing work.
Man, I’m still so disappointed this game never saw the light of day! If you’re feeling the same way, let’s chat about it over on the ComicBook Forum – come share your thoughts!
