Hytale Revived: Indie Devs Re-Acquire Game After Riot Cancellation

Earlier this year, Riot Games canceled Hytale, a promising sandbox-RPG often compared to Minecraft. Riot had purchased Hypixel Studios, the team behind the popular “Hypixel” Minecraft server, to develop the game, but unfortunately, it didn’t come to fruition and was ultimately scrapped.

For a long time, the future of Hytale was uncertain. But today, Hypixel Studios announced they’ve bought Hytale back from Riot Games! They plan to refocus the game on its original ideas and finally release a playable version for fans. An announcement about when Early Access will begin is expected soon.

Hytale Saved By Indie Devs After Riot Games Cancellation

Hypixel Studios and Riot Games have reached an unusual agreement: the original Hypixel team has brought Hytale back under their control and plans to rebuild it to match their initial vision. This involved bringing back over 30 developers who were previously involved with the game and negotiating a deal to work on an updated version.

On June 23, 2025, Hytale’s development was stopped as Hypixel Studios began to close down. The team had previously offered the project to Riot Games, admitting they hadn’t fully assessed its condition and understood the significant challenges. To try and revive it, they decided to abandon their new engine and instead return to the original engine and their initial concept for the game.

The project is now funded and run by the two developers who make up Hypixel Studios. They’ve committed to personally funding it for the next decade, which should reassure anyone worried about its future.

Hytale Will Be In Early Access Soon

When Hypixel Studio decided to take back control of Hytale and give fans a playable version, they had to change their priorities from developing the game’s engine to actually making a fun game. While it’s not fully clear what this means for the project yet, it looks like they’re switching from the Cross-Platform Engine to the Legacy Engine, and will be announcing Early Access to Hytale in the next few weeks.

I honestly can’t believe it! We’re finally getting our hands on Hytale! It’s not quite the full game yet – some things like Adventure Mode and Minigames are still in the works – but after thinking it might never happen, just getting Early Access with Exploration and Creative Modes, and modding support, is incredible. It’s a huge surprise and a fantastic day for anyone who’s been following this project – I really thought it was lost for a while there!
