A highly-regarded police drama from the 1980s is gaining popularity on streaming services. Many who watched cable TV back then will remember it for its unique style – think vibrant fashion, exciting car chases, and a soundtrack filled with popular music. It really stood out from other shows of its time.
The enduring appeal of Miami Vice is evident in several attempts to revive the series, including the 2006 movie directed by Michael Mann. Now, rumors suggest Austin Butler and Michael B. Jordan are being considered to star in a potential reboot, taking on the roles originally played by Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas.
You know, it’s really cool that after 41 years, fans like me can finally watch the original Miami Vice whenever we want, streaming it at home. It’s awesome that it’s available on demand now!
Miami Vice Ranks #1 on Vudu/Fandango at Home
I was checking Vudu—now called Fandango at Home after Fandango bought them—and I couldn’t believe it: Miami Vice is currently the most popular title! It’s a bit of a shock, honestly, especially since we haven’t heard much about the new reboot they’ve been planning. It’s cool to see a classic get some love, though!
The second most popular TV show is The American Revolution, with Hoarding for the Holidays, 7th Heaven, Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy, Eric Jerome Dickey’s Friends and Lovers, The Hospital, Bluey, and The Ropers rounding out the top shows.
Two Robot Chicken collections are currently popular on Vudu and Fandango at Home. Robot Chicken: The Misfits Special Collection is number one, and Robot Chicken: Christmas Specials is fourth.
Following news that Austin Butler might play Sonny Crockett, speculation began that Michael B. Jordan was being considered for the role of Rico Tubbs in the upcoming Miami Vice film. While no official casting announcements have been made, the movie is currently scheduled for release on August 6, 2027, and is expected to be shown in IMAX theaters.
Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx starred in the 2006 film Miami Vice, directed by Michael Mann, who also oversaw the original series. Despite the anticipation, the movie received mixed reviews, scoring 47% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and 43% from audiences. It earned $164 million globally.
I remember watching Miami Vice when it was on NBC from 1984 to 1989. It was all about these two undercover Miami detectives, Sonny Crockett and Rico Tubbs, and their cases. Looking back, it really set the stage for a lot of the buddy-cop shows and movies we see today. And honestly, it’s how I picture the 80s – fast cars and bright, bold fashion!
Miami Vice is available to rent or buy on Fandango at Home.
