As a huge fan of both Ahsoka and Rebels, I was really interested to hear Henry Gilroy talk about some of the choices made in the new series. He actually explained why he didn’t agree with a particular direction one of the characters took. Apparently, the idea had come up when they were working on the animated Rebels show, but they decided against it back then!
Henry Gilroy discusses Sabine’s Jedi training storyline in Star Wars: Ahsoka
On the Pod of Rebellion podcast, Henry Gilroy talked about the planned storyline for Sabine Wren learning to become a Jedi.
Gilroy explained that the idea was never intended and that it detracted from Ezra’s storyline. He felt it was a rehash of something they’d already done and unnecessary, describing giving Sabine Force powers as ‘too much’ – especially since she was already a skilled and unique fighter.
Gilroy explained that the show Rebels demonstrated this idea through Sabine Wren’s story with the Darksaber. He pointed out that the storyline proves you don’t need to be a Jedi to live by Jedi principles. Sabine learned to use the Darksaber, but she eventually gave it to someone else to lead Mandalore.
Gilroy stated he wasn’t involved in the creation of the Ahsoka series, and was surprised to see Sabine become Ahsoka’s apprentice. Following the events of Rebels, Sabine starts learning the ways of the Force from Ahsoka, but struggles to connect with it. Ultimately, she manages to use the Force to help Ezra in the show’s final moments.
Gilroy revealed that the idea of Sabine becoming a Jedi was first explored in the third season of Rebels. He explained that it detracted from Ezra’s character arc and felt like retreading old ground, as they’d already explored a similar storyline.
The writers felt the initial concept wasn’t strong, and that’s how they viewed it while creating the animated series. This shows that the way Ahsoka was ultimately presented was different from what they originally envisioned for the character.
