Fans are still hoping for a continuation of the popular series Smallville, and a recent update from one of the original actors has sparked renewed interest. Smallville was a groundbreaking show that told the story of Clark Kent before he became Superman, and with so many revivals happening now, a sequel feels possible.
The cast of Smallville reunited at Liverpool Comic-Con (according to Purple Nurple Reviews) and discussed the animated sequel series Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum have been developing. Rosenbaum explained that they’ve created some concept art and the original creators, Al Gough and Miles Miller, are involved. He and Welling are eager to move forward, but they’re waiting for the perfect moment to pitch the project.
I recently spoke with the actor who played Lex Luthor, and he gave me the inside scoop on a potential return. He emphasized that timing is everything – the studio really needs to be on board and actively pursuing it. He said they absolutely want to get the project done, and the plan is to include all the original cast members when they do. However, he was clear that there’s no firm timeline yet. It’s still being developed, and honestly, they just don’t know when it will happen, but they’re working on it.
During the same appearance, Welling expressed his desire to play Batman in James Gunn’s new DC Universe. Rosenbaum and Laura Vandervoort, known for playing Supergirl, both said they’d be interested in the roles of Joker and Harley Quinn. The current focus at DC Studios on Gunn’s reboot of the DC Universe is also why a continuation of the animated series hasn’t been developed yet.
In a November 2024 interview with ScreenRant, Smallville star Tom Welling explained that the project was on hold because they hadn’t been able to schedule a meeting with Warner Bros. He said they’re currently waiting for the studio’s approval to move forward.
We’re eager to make this happen, but we haven’t received approval from Warner Brothers yet. We require their permission before we can move forward.
ScreenRant: Are they just not open to it, or are they just not responding?
Honestly, it’s baffling. We pitched this idea, and we haven’t even heard back from Warner Bros.! What’s strange is, this isn’t about making a huge, money-spinning blockbuster. It’s something the fans would really get excited about, and we – the team – genuinely enjoy working together and think it would be a blast. But it’s clear it’s just not a priority for them right now, and I’m not trying to criticize them, it just seems to have fallen through the cracks.
Several actors from the show Smallville are interested in returning for an animated sequel. However, according to the show’s original creator, Al Gough, the project might be delayed. He explained in mid-March 2025 that they were waiting for the new Superman movie from DC Studios to be released before moving forward with the Smallville update.
Gough believes the biggest issue with projects in development, whether at a studio or network, is changes in leadership. Warner Bros. has experienced a lot of that recently, and their decision to reboot Superman yet again is likely delaying their project for a while. He notes that ideas often resurface eventually, pointing to the recent news that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is being rebooted for Hulu as an example.
Because DC Studios plans to explore stories outside the main DC Universe – known as Elseworlds – the popular series Smallville could easily fit into that category. Given the show’s continued popularity and growing international audience, a sequel seems like a strong possibility.
Reviving Smallville as an animated series would likely be cheaper than filming it with actors again. As James Gunn builds his new DC Universe, there’s a possibility the popular show could return in the future, perhaps in a different format.
Smallville is available through streaming and home media release, including Blu-ray and DVD.
