Following several years of planning after the passing of its star, Jason David Frank’s film, Legend of the White Dragon, now has a confirmed release timeframe. The action movie has been in development for over ten years, a project where the original Power Rangers star worked with Aaron and Sean Schoenke of Bat in the Sun to create a more adult version of the superhero story, with plans to build a larger connected universe.
In his last role before passing away, Frank starred as Erik Reed in Legend of the White Dragon. Reed is a retired superhero who steps back into action to defend his family and city from a dangerous new enemy, Dragon Prime, played by Schoenke. The film brought Frank back together with former Power Rangers co-stars Jason Faunt, Cerina Vincent, and Ciara Hanna. The project was mainly funded by fans and went through two versions, the second of which was completed after Frank’s death in November 2022, causing several delays in its release.
During a panel at Motor City Comic Con, hosted by ScreenRant‘s Joe Deckelmeier, David Ramsey shared when fans can expect Legend of the White Dragon to be released. He first thanked everyone for their continued interest in the film, and spoke fondly of the late Frank, describing him as an exceptional person. Ramsey highlighted Frank’s wonderful spirit and soul, saying they are still deeply felt.
He then shared that March is currently the most recent target for the release of Legend of the White Dragon. He explained that the team has been trying to keep backers – many of whom were present at the panel – informed, but adjustments to the film following Frank’s passing are now complete.
People have been talking about this for a while now. It took a long time to finish the project, especially after the loss. We were about two-thirds of the way done when it happened, and as of last summer, the expected completion date was March.
Ramsey’s recent news about Legend of the White Dragon is consistent with what others involved in the film have already shared. This year, Schoenke has released several heartfelt behind-the-scenes videos and photos of Frank filming, and in early 2025, confirmed that the movie was fully edited—they were simply waiting for a response from their distributor, Falling Forward Films.
Although Ramsey doesn’t have a firm release date, his optimism about the future of Legend of the White Dragon after Frank’s passing is positive news. Similar to Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (after Heath Ledger’s death) and Game of Death (following Bruce Lee’s passing), losing a main actor so early in filming is both a difficult emotional blow and a challenge for the creative process.
Thanks to assurances from Ramsey, the team working on Legend of the White Dragon has a clear plan and a likely release timeframe. This means the movie, intended as a respectful conclusion to Jason David Frank’s time with Power Rangers, is getting closer to release. Plus, with plans for future Power Rangers projects – including a reboot movie at Paramount and a live-action series on Disney+ – how audiences respond to this film could influence the direction of the franchise going forward.
