The latest Netflix Top 10 list is out, and it’s full of variety! You’ll find everything from classic films like Frankenstein and comedies like The Hangover, to newer shows like KPop Demon Hunters. Surprisingly, a Liam Neeson movie from four years ago has also climbed into the top 5. While critics weren’t completely won over, audiences loved it, giving it an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Netflix’s The Marksman tells the story of Jim Hanson, a tough, solitary rancher living near the border. His quiet life is disrupted when a mother and son, escaping a dangerous cartel, seek refuge on his land. After a violent confrontation, Jim promises to protect the boy, Miguel, even though his police officer daughter warns him against it. He then helps Miguel escape from border patrol custody, and the two go on the run, trying to stay one step ahead of both the authorities and the cartel.
It’s A Fun, Gritty Adventure
Okay, let’s be real, The Marksman isn’t reinventing the wheel. As a big action and western fan, I’ve definitely seen this movie’s beats before – it relies heavily on familiar tropes. But honestly? It’s not bad. It’s a perfectly decent way to spend an evening. Jeff Ames from ComingSoon.net put it well – there’s enough going on to keep you watching, even if the movie prioritizes action over really digging into important themes. Deidre Molumby of entertainment.ie compared it to Logan, but without the superpowers or the same emotional punch. It’s not the worst Liam Neeson action movie I’ve seen, but you can tell the formula is starting to feel a little tired.
This action movie is generally entertaining, building to a thrilling finale. Liam Neeson plays a character similar to his role in Taken, delivering a reliably tough performance. Viewers seemed to enjoy it, with one person saying The Marksman is a solid, enjoyable film and praising Neeson’s continued action lead roles. They also appreciated the movie’s focus on important American issues. Another viewer dismissed negative reviews, calling them pretentious and recommending the film for all ages – a great choice for families and everyone else who just wants to be entertained.
