2025 was a big year for Marvel Studios, continuing the exciting Multiverse Saga with several new shows and movies. The year kicked off with a new animated Spider-Man series, and a new Captain America story began, focusing on Sam Wilson. Marvel also introduced new superhero teams like the Thunderbolts and finally rebooted the Fantastic Four. On the animated side, fans enjoyed Ironheart, Eyes of Wakanda, and Marvel Zombies.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe had a bit of a rough patch during its Multiverse Saga, but 2025 saw a strong comeback with several well-made movies and shows, and some exciting hints about the future. Here’s a look at the most important events from the 2025 releases as the MCU moves closer to wrapping up the Multiverse Saga.
Spider-Man Received a Fresh Origin Story
A standout success has come from the animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Though Spider-Man has been animated many times before, this new show from Marvel Studios Animation offers a fresh take on his origin story. It reimagines the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a twist: Norman Osborn becomes Peter Parker’s mentor instead of Tony Stark.
The season finale of Spider-Man’s show completed a surprising origin story twist: a spider from Oscorp was sent back in time by Doctor Strange. Along with it came a creature like Venom, and Norman Osborn managed to capture some of it. Meanwhile, Peter Parker’s friend Lonnie became the villain Tombstone, and Otto Octavius started building his dangerous tentacles. Adding to the excitement, Daredevil (voiced by Charlie Cox) appeared and asked Finesse to investigate Harry Osborn and Oscorp.
The Leader Teased the Multiverse inCaptain America: Brave New World
In Captain America: Brave New World, Sam Wilson ultimately faced off against the President of the United States, Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who had transformed into the Red Hulk. Captain America won the battle, leading to Ross’s impeachment and imprisonment with Sterns. Although the film mostly told a self-contained story within the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, it set the stage for future events at its conclusion.
The scene after the credits of Captain America: Brave New World showed Captain America talking to the Leader while he was imprisoned. The Leader hinted at seeing alternate realities and warned Captain America that he’ll need to defend their world from threats coming from those other realities. This is almost certainly a setup for Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to feature Doctor Doom, characters from the X-Men (originally from Fox’s films), and other new heroes and villains.
Kingpin Began To Hunt Down Vigilantes in New York City
The Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again brought back the realistic, street-focused storytelling that fans first enjoyed in the Marvel Netflix shows. Beyond Wilson Fisk’s rise to mayor of New York City, the series also introduced another significant plot point.
The first season of Daredevil: Born Again concluded with Kingpin activating a task force designed to stop vigilantes, which could impact other heroes in New York City, like Spider-Man. The series also brought back Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, and he’s set to appear in his own upcoming special and in a future Spider-Man movie.
Sentry Was Born in Thunderbolts*
This year, Marvel Studios released Thunderbolts, a film that united a team of characters previously seen in other Marvel movies. The film also debuted Sentry, who is potentially one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far.
Bob played the role of Sentry, and much like Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron, he quickly became a memorable character. He’s also set to reappear in Doomsday.
Thunderbolts* Also Introduced the New Avengers
Before the release of Thunderbolts, fans were puzzled by the asterisk in the title. The movie finally revealed its meaning: Valentina Allegra de Fontaine presented the team – consisting of Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, and John Walker – as the new Avengers after they successfully defeated the Void.
The Thunderbolts trailer included a clip from Avengers: Doomsday that suggested a disagreement between the New Avengers and Captain America. It also seemed to hint at the possible arrival of the Fantastic Four, or characters from their world, entering the main Marvel universe (Earth-616).
Mephisto Finally Made His MCU Debut in Ironheart
Marvel Studios launched its first TV series, WandaVision, in 2021. Though it’s considered one of the franchise’s strongest offerings, some fans were left wanting more, particularly hoping to see the character Mephisto. While Mephisto didn’t appear in WandaVision, he eventually joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Ironheart, with Sacha Baron Cohen taking on the role.
The finale of Ironheart showed that Mephisto was the source of The Hood’s abilities. After Riri Williams beat Mephisto, he tried to make a deal with her: he’d bring back her friend Natalie, who had died. The ending hinted that Riri agreed to this deal, meaning Mephisto will probably be a significant character in future stories.
The Fantastic Four Saved Earth-828 From Galactus
Everyone was eagerly awaiting Marvel Studios’ release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and it finally delivered a successful big-screen adaptation of the superhero team. While produced by Marvel Studios, the film portrays the characters as already established heroes from the alternate, retro-futuristic Earth-828.
The Fantastic Four concluded their movie by saving Earth from Galactus, who was targeting their son, Franklin. This victory solidified their reputation as a top-tier superhero team and temporarily stopped Galactus. However, Galactus remains at large, meaning the threat he poses could still be a problem for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Doctor Doom Debuted to Meet Franklin Richards
Franklin Richards’ birth is set to significantly impact the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s incredibly powerful in the comics—a fact hinted at by Galactus in the recent film. Although Galactus didn’t succeed in taking Franklin, it appears another villain is also pursuing him. A scene after the credits of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, set four years after Galactus’s defeat, showed Doctor Doom encountering Franklin at the Baxter Building, as seen in a separate scene from Avengers: Doomsday.
The movie hinted at the origins of Doctor Doom, specifically his home country of Latveria, and suggests this version of the character, played by Robert Downey Jr., will come from the same alternate Earth (Earth-828) as the Fantastic Four. It’s possible Doctor Doom will rely on Franklin’s abilities to control the multiverse and build Battleworld. His appearance in the post-credits scene of the Fantastic Four movie was a big moment for the MCU, considering his history in the comics, and it establishes Franklin as a key player as the Multiverse Saga heads towards its conclusion.
Eyes of Wakanda Gave Black Panther a Deeper Meaning
Black Panther is still a high point for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, celebrated for both its financial success and its historic Best Picture nomination. A major reason for the film’s impact was its creation of Wakanda, a richly detailed world that was further expanded upon in the animated series, Eyes of Wakanda. This series presented a collection of stories set across different time periods. Though each story focusing on the War Dogs could be enjoyed on its own, they were connected by a larger mystery that ultimately revealed something significant.
The Vibranium axe Erik Killmonger stole in the first Black Panther movie actually had a positive impact on Wakanda’s future. Because he used the axe, Wakanda eventually became known to the world. The comic series Eyes of Wakanda showed what would have happened if Killmonger hadn’t stolen it – a future where Wakanda fell to an alien invasion. This makes Eyes of Wakanda similar to other Marvel prequels like Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain Marvel, and Black Widow, which all add depth and backstory to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Scarlet Witch Took Over an Alternate MCU in Marvel Zombies
Marvel Zombies was Marvel Studios’ final release of 2025, and like many Marvel stories, it was set in an alternate reality. The series centered on Kamala Khan’s quest to overcome Scarlet Witch, who had become the ruler of the undead.
The series concluded with a shocking twist: after Scarlet Witch tried to rebuild the world with Kamala’s help and a powerful explosion, Kamala found herself in a seemingly normal reality. However, Riri Williams quickly revealed the truth – zombies still controlled the Earth, leaving the story on a major cliffhanger.
