OSRS: Best Sailing Training Guide 1-50+

Okay, so sailing is finally here in Old School RuneScape, which is awesome! Now I need to get out there and start leveling up my Sailing skill – time to hit the waves!

Like with any skill in RuneScape, I always try to level up as fast as possible. Seriously, who wants to waste time? I want to unlock everything and get all the benefits without grinding forever!

In this guide, we’ll help you with the initial Sailing training up to level 50.

Sailing Training Guide | Old School RuneScape

Levels 1 to 15

First, you’ll need to unlock the Sailing skill by completing the “Pandemonium” quest. You can begin this quest by speaking with Will or Anne in Port Sarim. This quest is a detailed introduction to Sailing, so it’s best to follow along carefully.

This adventure will also teach you about Courier Tasks, which are the first type of Port Task you’ll encounter. These tasks are a great way to earn experience points, and you should complete them frequently until you reach Level 15.

Besides battles, another great way to level up early on is by charting the sea! As you sail around, you’ll come across places you can click on. When you do, you’ll chart them and get some experience points – it’s a really helpful way to gain XP at the beginning of the game.

Okay, so here’s a cool thing I learned: if I fully explore and map out every spot in an area, I get bonus XP! But when I first start out, I can only map using two methods: my Captain’s Log for basic charting, and the Spyglass for a bit more detailed mapping. Gotta unlock those other charting options later, I guess!

You’ll unlock the “Prying Times” quest when you reach Level 12. Finishing this quest lets you discover recipes for forgotten drinks, and you’ll earn extra experience points as a reward.

Be careful when drinking these potions! They have unpredictable effects that could be dangerous – you might even be killed or instantly moved to a different location, potentially losing your boat. If you do lose your boat, don’t worry – you can get a new one by speaking to a Shipwright at any dock and paying a small fee.

Don’t forget to watch for when the wind fills your sails! You’ll see a message in the chat when it happens. Clicking on your sails at that moment gives you a small experience boost, which is really helpful when you’re just starting out.

Levels 15 to 30

Once you hit Level 15, head to a Shipwright. You can find them at any dock, and they’ll help you build and customize your ship.

Right now, your main goal is to get a Skiff to replace your old Raft. After that, you’ll want to modify your new boat to include a Salvaging Hook.

This feature lets you collect resources from shipwrecks you find at sea. It’s a slower way to gain experience compared to Port Tasks, but it requires very little active play, making it good for earning experience while you’re away from the game.

Right now, focus on completing Port Tasks, and do some Salvaging whenever you have a chance for easy experience gains.

Make sure to finish all quests related to sailing as you progress, like “Current Affairs” at level 22. Completing this quest specifically unlocks new charting features and rewards you with experience points.

Levels 30 to 50+

When you hit Level 30, you’ll unlock two new methods for gaining experience points (XP). The first is an addition to Port Tasks called Bounty Tasks.

These new Bounty Tasks are different from regular Courier Tasks – you’ll be battling sea creatures at sea! They offer a good amount of experience points and provide a welcome change of pace from typical tasks.

Another way to level up is through the Barracuda Trials, which begin with “The Tempor Tantrum.” In this mode, you’ll race against the clock, following a set path to gather crates and deliver packages.

Barracuda Trials have different levels, and you unlock better ones by completing the earlier levels within the time limit. Higher levels are more challenging, but they also reward you with more experience points!

New, more challenging Barracuda Trials become available at levels 55 and 72. While they take more time and effort, completing them rewards significantly more experience points.

You’ll unlock the “Troubled Tortugans” quest when you reach Level 45. We suggest completing it right away because it’s a simple quest that rewards a significant 10,000 XP.

Going forward, the fastest way to gain experience will be by completing Barracuda Trials and Bounty Tasks. If you’d like a more relaxed activity, Salvaging is also a good option.

That wraps up our guide to Sailing training in Old School RuneScape! We hope it helps you level up to 50 and beyond quickly.
