OSRS: How to Unlock Sailing (Pandemonium Quest Guide)

This guide explains how to complete Pandemonium, the quest you must finish before you can begin Sailing training in Old School RuneScape. It’s a quest with no prerequisites – simply go to Port Sarim and speak with Will and Anne to get started.

This initial task serves as a brief tutorial for sailing. While speaking with the instructor, you can use the spacebar to quickly review the conversation. Afterwards, you’ll be placed on a practice boat to familiarize yourself with how to control it.

Learning How to Sail

While on the boat, select the Navigate Helm option. This is where you control everything the boat does – you can adjust the sails, stop, go in reverse, or speed up. To set the sails and choose a direction, click Set Sails and then click on the water where you want to go.

To start, sail south until Will instructs you to drop anchor close to a shipwreck. Once you’ve stopped the boat by adjusting your sails, use the salvaging hook to check for any salvageable items.

Just when you discover something interesting, Anne unexpectedly throws you into the water. You end up washed ashore on the island of Pandemonium, soaked and with nothing left but the water in your shoes.

Meeting the Crew on Pandemonium

Once you arrive on the beach, head directly to the bar. First, speak with Squawking Steve Beanie, the bartender, and then find Brass Hand Harry, who will be displaying the new Sailing cape.

So, Steve sent me to this guy Ribs, but he was super brief – barely a hello before he sent me right back! Then, after a quick chat with Steve again, he told me to find Junior Jim. Looks like Jim’s going to be my main contact for everything from now on.

There is a lot of dialogue, so don’t feel bad about skipping it.

Building Your Boat

Junior Jim will transport you to the shipyard. Use the gangplank and click the highlighted area to build your first storage upgrade – it’s free! Once you’ve built it, go back to Jim. He’ll then send you to Pandemonium and give you your first job: travel to Port Sarim and collect some cargo.

Sailing to Port Sarim

Board your boat again by going to the Gangplank. This is how you can disembark.

You can’t move until you touch the helm. When you’re ready, set sails and angle northwest.

After you’ve finished exploring the small island, head north and follow the wind currents until you arrive at Port Sarim. You’ll be able to tell you’re getting close when you spot the floating markers. Look for the gangplank with a flag and step off there.

Talk to the Port Master, then grab the cargo from the table covered in gold coins.

Returning to Pandemonium

Return to your ship. Before you start moving, open your storage and drop off the cargo. You won’t be able to sail while you’re holding it.

Return to Pandemonium the way you came. Slow down your boat by adjusting the sails, open the storage compartment, and take out the cargo. Make sure you have the cargo before leaving the boat, or you’ll have to go back and get it – it won’t be there if you return a second time.

Talk to the Port Master to turn it in. You’ll get a chunk of XP, which bumps you to level two.

Finishing the Quest

Go back to Junior Jim. He’ll point you to the task board, which is where you can find new sailing jobs. After that, have one final conversation with Steve, where you’ll meet Old Grog. Old Grog promises to track down Will and Anne, setting up the next part of the quest.

Finishing Pandemonium rewards you with:

  • 1 quest point
  • Access to the Sailing skill
  • Access to Pandemonium
  • A raft
  • 300 Sailing XP
  • 25 sawmills

Okay, I just finished the Pandemonium quest, and wow, it was a really great introduction to everything! It didn’t take too long, but it explained the basics super clearly and definitely got me excited about the sailing stuff coming up. Now I’m ready to get out on the water and really level up my sailing skills – time to become a sea captain!
