WWE is nearing the end of its scheduled TV shows for 2025, with one major pay-per-view event, Survivor Series, still to come. It’s been a challenging year, especially with some wrestlers injured, which has led to a few matches feeling rushed or disconnected from the overall storylines. However, I believe Survivor Series has had issues for some time now, and it’s time we address them.
It’s increasingly obvious that Survivor Series isn’t performing as well as the Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, and SummerSlam. Even with John Cena’s farewell appearances, this year’s Survivor Series – and possibly recent ones – hasn’t been as strong as it used to be.

Survivor Series Has Lost The Aura Required Of A Big Four Event
I used to see Survivor Series as a really pivotal event. It felt like the last big opportunity for WWE to reset things and lay the groundwork for the road to WrestleMania. Honestly, I think it was the one show where you truly expected the unexpected from a storyline perspective, and I loved that about it. It always felt like a fresh start, giving WWE a chance to course-correct and build momentum heading into WrestleMania season.
The last few years haven’t been very exciting. It feels like they’ve relied too much on title matches for minor rivalries and then crammed all the biggest stars into a single WarGames match. If you look at the event lineups from this year, last year, and 2023, you’ll see this pattern.
Over the past couple of years, the champion usually held onto their title when defending it, except for when Shinsuke Nakamura beat L.A. Knight for the United States Championship. Big events like these are exciting because titles often change hands, and that hasn’t been happening lately.
Honestly, I’m really disappointed with how Wargames is being used. It felt like a huge deal when it was announced it was coming back, but now it just feels like they’re throwing a bunch of big names into a big cage with nothing really on the line. The Royal Rumble means something – it gets you a WrestleMania match. SummerSlam feels like another WrestleMania. But Wargames? It feels as pointless as a regular six-person tag team match on Raw. Why should the wrestlers, or even we fans, get invested in who wins when there’s absolutely nothing at stake?

The Wargames Gimmick Has Resulted In More Negatives Than Positives
Honestly, I was really hoping for more when Wargames came back. There was a lot of buzz about it being a major attraction at Survivor Series, but I haven’t been wowed by what I’ve seen. The one exception? Iyo Sky’s dive into the trash cans was incredible – a genuinely great moment. She pulled it off cleanly, which is rare, as most people taking that kind of fall from the cage haven’t been so lucky.
It’s easy to remember how dangerous cage matches can be – Bronson Reed once needed surgery after a leg injury from a jump off the cage, and Jimmy Uso broke his toe in the same match. It’s likely not a coincidence; the cage itself seems to encourage wrestlers to attempt risky moves, especially when multiple people are involved and things get chaotic.
Aside from accidental injuries, most of what happens in a Wargames match feels like it’s made up on the spot, rather than pre-planned. It’s comparable to a Royal Rumble, but even more unpredictable because all the wrestlers are in the ring at the same time, and there are actually two rings connected by a rope. It seems really difficult to create a believable and exciting match while also avoiding collisions with other performers.
Moves like a spear are really dangerous if wrestlers aren’t communicating, especially if someone else is running across the ring at the same time. On the other hand, when a planned spot is set up, it often feels obvious because everyone is focused on getting ready for it or avoiding it. I have a lot of issues with this match, and that’s a big deal since it makes up a third of the whole show. It might be controversial, but I think it’s time to stop doing Wargames matches.

With This Usually Being The Last PLE Of The Year, Everything Feels Like It’s In A Holding Pattern To Prepare For WrestleMania Season
I’ve mentioned this before, but it’s worth saying again: Survivor Series is the perfect event for WWE to do something unexpected and award a championship to a less-established star. This can help clear the way for bigger storylines heading into the Royal Rumble, allowing the main narratives of the season to really take off.

Watching John Cena’s Final WWE Raw Match Made Me Realize What His Retirement Tour Has Been Missing
WWE hasn’t made any big changes with its champions recently, which is disappointing. Instead of fresh excitement before the new year, we’re seeing more of the same, and it’s unlikely much will happen to truly grab our attention before the Royal Rumble. It’s a far cry from the thrill of a surprise win like Jey Uso’s Rumble victory.
The central storyline remains familiar: can a mismatched group of top stars overcome their conflicts and defeat the villainous team led by Paul Heyman? With so much talent involved each year, the matches should be memorable. I can easily recall amazing moments from events like Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, and SummerSlam over the last five years, but ask me to remember anything significant from Survivor Series, and I’m drawing a blank.
I’m really hoping Survivor Series will be a good show and remind me why I enjoy wrestling. I’ll be watching live on ESPN on Saturday, November 29th, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that WWE delivers a memorable event.
